Narrated Abu Maryam `Abdullah bin Ziyad Al-Aasadi: When Talha, AzZubair and `Aisha moved to Basra, `Ali sent `Ammar bin Yasir and Hasan bin `Ali who came to us at Kufa and ascended the pulpit. Al-Hasan bin `Ali was at the top of the pulpit and `Ammar was below Al-Hasan. We all gathered before him. I heard `Ammar saying, "`Aisha has moved to Al-Busra. By Allah! She is the wife of your Prophet in this world and in the Hereafter. But Allah has put you to test whether you obey Him (Allah) or her (`Aisha).

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary: The meaning of Ammar radi Allahu anhu was that Ali radi Allahu anhu is the rightful caliph, and obedience to the caliph is obedience to Allah and His Messenger.

In the narration of Isma’ili, it is stated that Ammar radi Allahu anhu incited the people to fight against Aisha radi Allahu anha, and Hasan radi Allahu anhu conveyed this message on behalf of Ali radi Allahu anhu: “I remind the people of Allah and say to them, do not flee. If I am oppressed, then Allah will help me, and if I am an oppressor, then Allah will destroy me. By Allah, Talha and Zubair radi Allahu anhuma themselves pledged allegiance to me, then broke the pledge and set out to fight alongside Aisha radi Allahu anha.”

Abdullah bin Badil says: When the battle began, I came to the litter of Aisha radi Allahu anha. I said, ‘O Mother of the Believers, when Uthman radi Allahu anhu was martyred, I came to you, and you yourself said that now one should remain with Ali ibn Abi Talib, and now you yourself wish to fight him—what is this matter?’ Aisha radi Allahu anha did not give any reply.

Eventually, the legs of her camel were hamstrung, then I and her brother Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr both dismounted and lifted the litter, bringing it to Ali radi Allahu anhu. Ali radi Allahu anhu sent her into the women’s quarters of the house.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The meaning of the statement by Hazrat Ammar bin Yasir radi Allahu anhu was that Hazrat Aisha radi Allahu anha, by this action, did not cease to be the wife of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam; however, through her, Allah Ta’ala has certainly put you to a test.
There was an indication in this that you people should obey Hazrat Ali radi Allahu anhu because he is Amir al-Mu’minin radi Allahu anhu and, in principle, a rightly guided caliph.
Although Hazrat Aisha radi Allahu anha is a great personality and, in this world and the Hereafter, the honorable wife of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, despite this lofty status, she is not the caliph of the Muslims whose obedience is obligatory.
2.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that on this occasion, Hazrat Hasan radi Allahu anhu read out a message on behalf of Hazrat Ali radi Allahu anhu:
I adjure every person, for the sake of Allah, who is accustomed to choosing the truth, to support us.
If I am oppressed, then Allah will help me, and if I am an oppressor, then Allah will destroy me.
By Allah! Hazrat Talha radi Allahu anhu and Hazrat Zubair radi Allahu anhu first pledged allegiance to me, then broke it and came forth to fight alongside Hazrat Aisha radi Allahu anha. I have neither any greed for wealth nor have I altered any matter.
