Hadith Commentary:
By bringing this narration, Imam Bukhari’s intent is to show that in Sa’id’s narration, “good” or “evil” is mentioned with doubt.
All the Companions who were present there began to weep, because they realized that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had become extremely distressed due to the abundance of questions, and the distress of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is a sign of Allah’s wrath.
When he became angry due to the excessive questioning, one should reflect: how much greater would be the anger of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) towards the person who, after hearing his instructions, does not act upon them and instead listens to the words of other followers and flatterers? And how much more should such a person fear the wrath of Allah?
I have already written above that, as a punishment for the heedlessness and indifference of the people of India, and for abandoning the hadith and the Qur’an, the calamity of plague has descended upon them for several years; who knows what other punishments may descend in the future.
This section had not yet concluded—meaning, in the month of Safar, year 1323 Hijri—when news came from Punjab that a severe earthquake had occurred there, and hundreds of thousands of houses were leveled to the ground, and those that remained are also in a ruined state: neither a home to live in nor a place to sit.
In short, the people of India do not awaken from the slumber of heedlessness in any way, nor do they abandon prejudice and denial of the truth; who knows what other punishments are yet to come.
O Allah! Have mercy on the true Muslims and save them from these punishments. Ameen, O Lord of the worlds.
Maulana Waheeduz-Zaman (rahimahullah) was speaking of events from seventy-five years ago, but even today, in the year 1398 Hijri, the floods in Andhra Pradesh and the region of Mewat have revived the memory of these punishments.

Hadith Commentary:
Ibn Battal said that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah presented these ahadith in refutation of the person who says that one should ask Allah for trials (fitan), because they eradicate the hypocrites.
In this regard, a non-marfu’ (not directly attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) hadith is also presented, whose words are:
“In the end times, do not consider trials (fitan) to be evil, for they are a cause of the destruction of the hypocrites.” However, its chain of narration is weak and its narrators are unknown.
(Fath al-Bari: 13/55)
In any case, one should seek refuge with Allah from trials (fitan), because they pose a danger to a person’s faith.
And Allah knows best.
