Hadith 7046

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: A man came to Allah's Apostle and said, "I saw in a dream, a cloud having shade. Butter and honey were dropping from it and I saw the people gathering it in their hands, some gathering much and some a little. And behold, there was a rope extending from the earth to the sky, and I saw that you (the Prophet) held it and went up, and then another man held it and went up and (after that) another (third) held it and went up, and then after another (fourth) man held it, but it broke and then got connected again." Abu Bakr said, "O Allah's Apostle! Let my father be sacrificed for you! Allow me to interpret this dream." The Prophet said to him, "Interpret it." Abu Bakr said, "The cloud with shade symbolizes Islam, and the butter and honey dropping from it, symbolizes the Qur'an, its sweetness dropping and some people learning much of the Qur'an and some a little. The rope which is extended from the sky to the earth is the Truth which you (the Prophet) are following. You follow it and Allah will raise you high with it, and then another man will follow it and will rise up with it and another person will follow it and then another man will follow it but it will break and then it will be connected for him and he will rise up with it. O Allah's Apostle! Let my father be sacrificed for you! Am I right or wrong?" The Prophet replied, "You are right in some of it and wrong in some." Abu Bakr said, "O Allah's Prophet! By Allah, you must tell me in what I was wrong." The Prophet said, "Do not swear."

Hadith Commentary:
There were great apprehensions in detailing this dream, therefore you (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) deemed it appropriate to remain silent. This dream caused you distress because a caliph of mine would be afflicted with tribulations.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam spoke the truth. Al-Muhallab said: The explanation of Abu Bakr’s radi Allahu anhu interpretation is that the shade is a great blessing from among the blessings of Allah upon the people of Paradise, and likewise it was upon the Children of Israel, etc. (Fath)
That is, al-Muhallab said that the justification for the interpretation of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu is that shade is a very great blessing of Allah, just as Allah cast the shade of clouds over the Children of Israel.
Similarly, there will be shade over the people of Paradise.
Islam is likewise a blessed shade, under which a Muslim is saved from hardships and is granted blessings in this world and the Hereafter.
In the same way, there is healing in honey, as is mentioned in the Noble Qur’an.
Likewise, the Noble Qur’an itself is also a healing.
Indeed, it is a healing and a mercy for the believers, and in its recitation there is a sweetness like that of honey.

Hadith Commentary:

In one hadith, it is stated that a dream is like being tied to a bird’s leg; when it is interpreted, it comes to pass.
(Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, al-Ru’ya, Hadith 2279)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah says that this hadith is authentic, but its context is that the interpretation must be correct; if the interpreter’s explanation is incorrect, it will not come to pass, as in the case when Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu first interpreted a dream.
Since his entire interpretation was not based on reality, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam corrected and amended it, and did not say anything regarding the dream’s occurrence. However, due to some wisdom, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not highlight Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu’s mistake.
We do not need to take an interest in this matter.

Imam Muhallab clarified Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu’s interpretation and explained its reasoning.
He says that the shade of a cloud is a great blessing from Allah, just as Allah granted this blessing to the Children of Israel.
Similarly, there will be shade in Paradise.
The religion of Islam itself is such a blessed shade through which Muslims are saved from hardships.
Likewise, there is healing in honey, as mentioned in the Noble Qur’an.
The recitation of the Noble Qur’an also possesses the sweetness, delight, and pleasantness of honey.
