Hadith Commentary:

The word "afra" is the superlative form, meaning a very great lie.

Ibn Battal said: "Al-firya" refers to a tremendous lie that causes astonishment, meaning it is called an astonishingly great lie.

To fabricate a false dream itself is a major sin.

May Allah, the Exalted, protect all Muslims from this.

Ameen.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
(Firyah)
This refers to a lie that is very great and astonishes others; that is, to narrate a false dream is a very great lie.
Since, in reality, dreams are from Allah Ta'ala and are one of the forty-six parts of prophethood, if someone narrates a false dream, he attributes that lie to Allah Ta'ala. This is a tremendous slander against Allah Ta'ala.
On this basis, the one who narrates a false dream will be given the severest punishment.

2.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, through his chapter heading, has alluded to some other routes of transmission in which it is stated:
"Whoever narrates a false dream, on the Day of Resurrection he will be made to suffer such that he will be tasked with tying together two grains of barley, while he will never be able to do so."
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi, al-Ru'ya, Hadith: 2281)
In any case, the one who narrates a false dream will be given the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection because he has committed a tremendous slander against Allah Ta'ala.
