Hadith 7014

Narrated `Abdullah bin Salam: (In a dream) I saw myself in a garden, and there was a pillar in the middle of the garden, and there was a handhold at the top of the pillar. I was asked to climb it. I said, "I cannot." Then a servant came and lifted up my clothes and I climbed (the pillar), and then got hold of the handhold, and I woke up while still holding it. I narrated that to the Prophet who said, "The garden symbolizes the garden of Islam, and the handhold is the firm Islamic handhold which indicates that you will be adhering firmly to Islam until you die."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
The scholars of interpretation say that by "ring" (halqah) and "handle" (urwah), what is meant is the religious strength and character of the one who holds onto them.

In the hadith, "urwah wuthqa" refers to the following noble verse:
"Whoever rejects Taghut and believes in Allah has certainly grasped the most trustworthy handhold which will never break." (al-Baqarah: 2/256)

When Abdullah ibn Salam radi Allahu anhu awoke, the "urwah wuthqa" was in his hand.

The commentators have explained its meaning in two ways:
➊ I was holding it when my eyes opened, meaning I was holding it in the dream.
➋ It is also possible that, by the power of Allah Ta'ala, he was holding the ring and handle upon waking.

For Allah Ta'ala, doing such a thing is not difficult.

Hadith Commentary:

When Abdullah bin Salam (radi Allahu anhu) awoke from his sleep, he was holding onto the firm handle (urwah wuthqa).
This means that after grasping the handle and before letting it go, he woke up—that is, there was no interval between grasping the handle and waking up, or after waking up, his fist was still clenched as if holding something.

By this "firm handle" (urwah wuthqa) is meant faith (iman), as is stated in the Word of Allah, the Exalted:
“Whoever rejects false gods (taghut) and believes in Allah has indeed grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks.” ()

In this hadith is the virtue of Abdullah bin Salam (radi Allahu anhu), that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to him:
“You will remain steadfast upon Islam until your death.” And Allah knows best.

Vocabulary of the Hadith:
It is not appropriate for anyone to say what he does not know:
No one should say anything without evidence or proof.
They have told you that this person is from among the people of Paradise,
but they did not mention its evidence or proof.
Therefore, I am telling you its reason and background,
so that you may speak with evidence.

Benefits and Issues:

Abdullah bin Salam (radi Allahu anhu) was on the Jewish religion before accepting Islam, and he was a great scholar among them.

Remaining steadfast on the religion until the moment of death is a means of salvation.

The rank of martyrdom (shahadah) has been likened to a slippery mountain, because just as climbing a slippery mountain is difficult, in the same way, striving in jihad to attain martyrdom is difficult. However, it is lofty and a great station, like the mountain itself.
