Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: The Prophet said, "If anyone of you sees a dream that he likes, then it is from Allah, and he should thank Allah for it and narrate it to others; but if he sees something else, i.e., a dream that he dislikes, then it is from Satan, and he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil, and he should not mention it to anybody, for it will not harm him."

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In one narration it is stated:
“A good dream should be related to a scholar or a well-wisher.”
(Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Ta‘bir ar-Ru’ya, Hadith: 2278)
In another narration it is stated:
“If someone sees a disliked dream, he should spit three times to his left, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, and immediately change his side.”
(Sahih Muslim, ar-Ru’ya, Hadith: 5904(2262))
In another narration it is stated:
“At that time, he should get up and perform prayer.”
(Sahih Muslim, ar-Ru’ya, Hadith: 5905(2263))
➋
From these narrations, the etiquettes of good and bad dreams are described, the details of which are as follows:
Etiquettes for seeing good dreams:
He should praise and glorify Allah.
He should convey this glad tiding to others.
He should express happiness and joy, and instead of telling the general public, he should relate it to a well-wishing friend or a scholar who is an expert in interpretation.
Etiquettes for seeing bad dreams:
He should spit three times to his left.
He should seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Satan.
He should immediately change his side, and should not relate such a dream to anyone.
At that time, he should get up and perform prayer.
➌
The purpose of Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah in mentioning this hadith is that the creation and vision of every dream is from Allah, but since the cause of bad dreams is the interference of Satan, such dreams are attributed to Satan. He employs such manipulations to trouble human beings.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The etiquettes regarding bad dreams are as follows, which we have mentioned previously as well:
➊ Spit lightly three times to the left.
➋ Seek refuge with Allah from the evil of Shaytan.
➌ Immediately change your sleeping position.
➍ Do not relate this dream to anyone.
➎ Perform two units (rak‘ah) of prayer.
This is explicitly stated in another hadith.
(Sahih Muslim, al-Ru’ya, Hadith: 5900(2263))
2.
It should be noted that lying,
earning unlawful (haram) income, and committing sins are causes for having bad dreams, while truthfulness,
earning lawful (halal) income, and being diligent in good deeds are means for having good dreams.
And Allah knows best.
