Hadith 6936

Umar bin Al-Khattab said: I heard Hisham bin Al-Hakim reciting Surat Al-Furqan during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (saws). I listened to his recitation and noticed that he recited it in several different ways which Allah's Messenger (saws) had not taught me. So I was about to jump over him during his Salat (prayer) but I waited till he finished his Salat (prayer) whereupon I put, either his upper garment or my upper garment around his neck and seized him by it and asked him, "Who has taught you this Surah?" He replied: "Allah's Messenger (saws) has taught it to me." I said (to him), "You have told a lie! By Allah, Allah's Messenger (saws) has taught me this Surah which I have heard you reciting." So I dragged him to the Allah's Messenger (saws). I said: "O Allah's Messenger I have heard this man reciting Surat Al-Furqan in a way in which you have not taught me, and you did teach me Surah Al-Furqan." On that Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "O 'Umar, release him! Recite, O Hisham". So Hisham recited before him in the way as I heard him reciting. Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "It has been revealed like this." Then Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "Recite, O 'Umar" So recited it. The Prophet (saws) said, "It has been revealed like this." And then he added, "This Qur'an has been revealed to be recited in seven different ways, so recite it whichever way is easier for you."

Hadith Commentary:
The relevance of the chapter is as follows: Umar radi Allahu anhu placed a cloak around Hisham's neck and brought him by pulling it. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not hold him accountable for this, because Umar radi Allahu anhu, in his view, considered Hisham to be someone reciting in an incorrect manner—thus, he was regarded as someone making an interpretation (ta’wil).
The mujtahid (independent jurist) may be correct or may err.

Hadith Commentary:
If a person commits a mistake but has a reasonable excuse or interpretation (ta’wil), then his mistake should be clarified, but apart from this, he should not be condemned or reproached.
If a person commits a mistake without any reasonable excuse or interpretation, then he is blameworthy; therefore, he should be condemned and his mistake should also be clarified, just as in the above hadith, Umar radi Allahu anhu put a cloak’s collar around Hisham radi Allahu anhu’s neck, called him a liar, and brought him in that state to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not say anything to Umar radi Allahu anhu, but only said that there is breadth in the recitations of the Qur’an, so whichever is easy, it may be recited, because Umar radi Allahu anhu had a reasonable excuse: according to his understanding, he heard Hisham radi Allahu anhu reciting the Qur’an incorrectly, so he objected and even attributed him to falsehood.
In such circumstances, our duty is also that if we see someone committing a mistake, instead of scolding him, we should first clarify the mistake upon which he is persisting.
And Allah knows best.
