Hadith 6935

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established till two (huge) groups fight against each other, their claim being one and the same."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one narration, it is stated that there will be a great war between two large groups.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Al-Fitan, Hadith: 7121)
The two large groups referred to are the parties of Ali and Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhuma), and the great war refers to the Battle of Siffin.
Both of them had the same claim, that is, Islam.
Each group was convinced that it was upon the truth.

(2)
In the narration of Tabari, it is mentioned that when the rebellious group, that is, the Khawarij, will emerge, then the group among the two that is closer to the truth will fight and kill the rebellious people.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, for this very reason, mentioned the above title and presented the hadith.
(Fath al-Bari: 12/378)
There is no aspect of disparagement of Amir Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) established in this, because his claim was based on ijtihad (independent juristic reasoning).
If a mujtahid (one who exercises ijtihad) errs, he still receives one reward.

(3)
In any case, one should not have any leniency towards the Khawarij.
They declared the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) to be disbelievers, whereas declaring this sacred group to be disbelievers is to belie the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) testified to the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) being people of Paradise.
And Allah knows best.
