Hadith 6925

Abu Bakr said, "By Allah! I will fight whoever differentiates between prayers and Zakat as Zakat is the right to be taken from property (according to Allah's Orders). By Allah! If they refused to pay me even a kid they used to pay to Allah's Apostle, I would fight with them for withholding it." `Umar said, "By Allah: It was nothing, but I noticed that Allah opened Abu Bakr's chest towards the decision to fight, therefore I realized that his decision was right."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Whoever denies the obligatory acts, such as: the giving of zakat and so on, an investigation should be made regarding him. If he acknowledges its obligation but refuses to give it, then zakat should be taken from him by force and no fighting should be waged against him. However, if along with denial he is also prepared to fight, then such a person should not be pardoned; rather, fighting should be undertaken against such a person.

(2)
In reality, during the caliphate of Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, there were three types of apostates as follows:
➊ Those people who became engaged in idol worship and bid farewell to Islam.
➋ Those groups who followed Musaylimah the Liar and Aswad al-Ansi.
➌ There was also a group who professed Islam but refused to pay zakat, and they thought that the obligation of zakat was specific only to the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhu discussed with Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu regarding this last group, arguing that it was not permissible to fight them.

Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu intended to fight those who withheld zakat because they had withheld zakat by the sword and had opened a front of war against the Muslims.

Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu’s position was that the matter of prayer and zakat is one and the same.
If someone deliberately abandons prayer, fighting will be waged against him; similarly, if someone does not give zakat, it will be forcibly taken from him.
If he fights for this, then fighting will be waged against him.

In the end, Umar radi Allahu anhu also recognized the truth through the argument established by Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu and fully agreed with Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu’s position.
