Hadith 6813

Narrated Ash Shaibani: I asked `Abdullah bin Abi `Aufa, 'Did Allah's Apostle carry out the Rajam penalty ( i.e., stoning to death)?' He said, "Yes." I said, "Before the revelation of Surat-an-Nur or after it?" He replied, "I don't Know."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
By Surah al-Nur is meant the following noble verse:
"The woman or man guilty of fornication—flog each of them with a hundred lashes."
(al-Nur 24:2)
The benefit of asking about this was that if the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had carried out stoning (rajm) before the revelation of this verse, then it is possible that the noble verse abrogated that stoning, because this verse mentions flogging. And if its revelation occurred afterwards, then it is possible that the punishment of stoning for a married adulterer is specified by this verse. However, the Companion expressed his lack of knowledge, saying that he did not know.

(2)
The reality is that the revelation of these verses occurred before the punishment of stoning, because this surah was revealed in the 6th year of Hijrah, and the narrator of rajm is Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu), who accepted Islam at the time of the conquest of Khaybar in the 7th year of Hijrah.
Likewise, the narration regarding the incident of rajm is also reported from Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma).
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hudud, Hadith: 6824)
And Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) came to Madinah Tayyibah with his mother in the 9th year of Hijrah.
