Narrated 'Ikrima from Ibn 'Abbas: Allah's Apostles said, "When a slave (of Allah) commits illegal sexual intercourse, he is not a believer at the time of committing it; and if he steals, he is not a believer at the time of stealing; and if he drinks an alcoholic drink, when he is not a believer at the time of drinking it; and he is not a believer when he commits a murder," 'Ikrima said: I asked Ibn Abbas, "How is faith taken away from him?" He said, Like this," by clasping his hands and then separating them, and added, "But if he repents, faith returns to him like this, by clasping his hands again.

Hadith Commentary:
These are major sins (kabirah) from which whoever dies without repenting will die deprived of faith. Whoever possesses even a trace of faith will certainly repent before dying.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
According to one narration, Ikrimah asked Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma how faith (iman) is taken out, so he interlaced his fingers and then withdrew them, showing that in this way faith is taken out. If he repents, it returns in the same way; then he again interlaced his fingers to demonstrate this.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Hudud, Hadith: 6809)
In another hadith, it is mentioned that when a person commits adultery (zina), faith departs from him and becomes like a canopy over him.
If he refrains from it, it returns to him.
(2)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has explained the removal of faith in this way: after the act is finished, the state of the criminal does not remain the same, rather faith returns to him.
(al-Musannaf by Abd al-Razzaq: 416/7, Hadith: 13685, and Fath al-Bari: 72/12)
It is also possible that complete abstention from it causes its return.
If, after the sin, he persists in it, then he is like one who is continually committing it; in this case, faith remains outside him, as the narration from Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma through Ikrimah clarifies. However, in one narration, it is stated that if he finishes (the act), faith returns to him.
(Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Sunnah, Hadith: 4690)

Fiqh al-Hadith:
➊ It is understood from this that faith (iman) has many levels; faith increases and decreases. When a person commits major sins such as theft and adultery, his faith, during the act of sin, departs from his body and rises above his head like a canopy. Despite the departure of faith, this person does not become a disbeliever (kafir); rather, he remains a sinful Muslim, provided that he does not commit any of the nullifiers of Islam (nawāqid al-Islam).
➋ Adultery (zina), theft, and betrayal in war booty (mal al-ghanimah) are among the major sins (kabā'ir).
Warning: Those who, under the pretext of madrasas, mosques, organizations, groups, and charitable works, misappropriate donation money also fall under this same ruling. They should understand that one day they will have to appear before the All-Knowing of the secrets of the hearts and account for every single atom. A person once stole a cloak from the war booty, and that very cloak became a fire of Hell and clung to his body.
➌ A scholar should explain to people by giving them simple and relatable examples.
