Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The background of this hadith is as follows: Ziyad, who was born from Sumayyah radi Allahu anha and was attributed to the bed of Ubayd, was, due to political reasons, affiliated by Amir Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu to his own lineage and declared as his brother. Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu was Ziyad’s maternal brother. When Abu Uthman Nahdi mentioned this matter to Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu, he narrated the hadith. At that time, many of the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum objected to this action of Amir Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu. (Fath al-Bari: 12/66)
(2)
The scholars have interpreted the warning mentioned in the hadith as a threat (tahdid). However, there is no doubt regarding the disbelief (kufr) of one who considers this act permissible and lawful, and Paradise is forbidden for disbelievers. In some narrations, it is stated that whoever turns away from his father has committed disbelief (kufr). What is meant here is ingratitude for blessings (kufran ni‘mah), i.e., he has denied the great blessing of fatherhood. (Umdat al-Qari: 16/48)
