Hadith 6589

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ جُنْدَبًا ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " أَنَا فَرَطُكُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ " .
Narrated Jundab: I heard the Prophet, saying, "I am your predecessor at the Lake-Fount. (Al-Kauthar) .

Hadith Commentary:

In this hadith, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has declared the area between his house and his pulpit to be a garden from the gardens of Paradise. There are three meanings to this:

➊ This place will be transferred exactly as it is into Paradise; therefore, the literal meaning of this place is intended.

➋ The outcome for the one who worships at this spot is Paradise, so metaphorically this place has been called Paradise. However, this meaning is questionable because, in this sense, there is no particular distinction for this blessed place, whereas the Prophet’s intention is to state its special virtue.

➌ This place has been likened to a garden of Paradise, meaning this spot is like a garden of Paradise.

Allamah Khattabi rahimahullah has written that the purpose of this is to encourage people to reside in Madinah Tayyibah, meaning whoever worships here, it will lead him to Paradise, and whoever worships near the pulpit will be given water from the Pond of Kawthar on the Day of Resurrection.

From this hadith, it is understood that the Pond of Kawthar (Hawd al-Kawthar) is a reality. It is also understood that before the Ummah arrives at the Pond of Kawthar, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam will already be present there. The scholars of hadith (muhaddithin) have mentioned this issue in the chapter of creed (‘aqidah).
