Hadith Commentary:
These are those so-called Muslims who, by introducing new innovations (bid‘ah) into the religion, distorted its true form. Those who hold customary gatherings for the Prophet’s birthday (mawlid), perform rituals on the third day (tijah), recite fateha, practice grave worship and hold festivals (‘urs) at graves, those who venerate the ta‘ziyah, those who turn the shrines of the friends of Allah (awliya Allah) into places like mosques, and the deceitful types of spiritual guides, faqirs, murshids, and imams—all these people are included in the purview of this hadith. Outwardly, they appear to be Muslims, but inwardly they are immersed in shirk (associating partners with Allah) and innovations (bid‘ah).
Allah, the Exalted, will not grant such people of innovation (ahl al-bid‘ah) the drink from your blessed hand at the Pond of Kawthar.
Therefore, it is necessary for every sincere Muslim to avoid innovations (bid‘ah).
By “companions” (sahabah) are meant those people who, after your (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passing, became apostates, against whom Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (radi Allahu anhu) waged jihad.
