Hadith 6569

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "None will enter Paradise but will be shown the place he would have occupied in the (Hell) Fire if he had rejected faith, so that he may be more thankful; and none will enter the (Hell) Fire but will be shown the place he would have occupied in Paradise if he had faith, so that may be a cause of sorrow for him."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The clarification of this matter is found in another hadith, in which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Each one of you has two houses:
One house in Paradise and one house in Hell.
When someone dies and enters Hell, his house in Paradise is inherited by the people of Paradise.
This is the meaning of Allah the Exalted’s statement:
'These are the ones who will inherit.'
(: al-Mu’minun 23:10, and Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Zuhd, Hadith: 4341)"

(2)
Both of these houses are shown to every deceased person when he reaches the grave, as is mentioned in another hadith: when Allah the Exalted shows him his abode in Hell in the grave, it is said to him:
"See, what Allah the Exalted has saved you from."
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Zuhd, Hadith: 4268)
From this, the matchless justice of Allah the Exalted and His utmost mercy become evident.
