Hadith Commentary:
Then they will supplicate to Allah, and this title will be erased from them.
The narrator of this hadith is Anas bin Malik al-Ansari radi Allahu anhu, from the Khazraj tribe.
His mother was Umm Sulaym bint Milhan.
At the time when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam arrived in Madinah, his age was ten years.
From the very beginning, he remained in the service of the Prophet and had the honor of serving him for a full ten years.
During the caliphate of Umar (radi Allahu anhu), he settled in Basrah as a teacher.
After all the other noble Companions who resided in Basrah, he passed away in the year 91 AH.
By the blessing of the supplication of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he left behind a hundred descendants at the time of his death.
He is a very famous Companion, possessing numerous virtues.
Radi Allahu anhu wa ardaah.
According to the narration of Sahih Muslim, later this title of “people of Hellfire” will be removed from them.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
This hadith shows that there will be some believers who will enter Hellfire, and when Allah, exalted is He, removes them from Hell purely out of His grace and mercy, their color will have turned black due to the flames. Then, as a sign, a mark will be left on their necks, and because of this, the people of Paradise will call them “the people of Hellfire.”
Some narrations indicate that, ultimately, upon their insistence, this mark will be removed.
➋
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this hadith that these people will not be entitled to Paradise because of their deeds; rather, Allah, exalted is He, will admit them to Paradise purely out of His grace and mercy.
Because of their weak faith, Allah’s mercy will be near to them.
Allah, exalted is He, will remove them from there.
This mercy of Allah is His eternal attribute; however, its connection to such people will be contingent (i.e., newly manifested).
And Allah knows best.
➌
It should be noted that in the aforementioned narration, the narrator Qatadah is a mudallis, and he has narrated from Anas radi Allahu anhu with the word “an” (from), which could raise the suspicion of tadlis. Therefore, Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah, by mentioning a suspended (mu‘allaq) narration at the end of the hadith, has removed this suspicion, because in that narration Qatadah has explicitly stated “haddathana” (he narrated to us).
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah has narrated this suspended narration with a connected chain.
