Narrated `Aisha: There was a leather or wood container full of water in front of Allah's Apostle (at the time of his death). He would put his hand into the water and rub his face with it, saying, "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah! No doubt, death has its stupors." Then he raised his hand and started saying, "(O Allah!) with the highest companions." (See Qur'an 4:69) (and kept on saying it) till he expired and his hand dropped."

Hadith Commentary:
It is understood that the agony of death is not a hardship; rather, it occurs for the righteous servants so that their ranks may be elevated.

Hadith Commentary:
In one narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplicated to Allah at that time with these words:
“O Allah! Help me to bear the agonies of death.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Al-Jana'iz, Hadith: 1623)
In another narration, it is reported that Aisha (radi Allahu anha) said:
When I witnessed this state of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) at the time of death, then the severity of death for anyone did not seem unpleasant to me.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Al-Maghazi, Hadith: 4446)
It is understood from this that the severity of death is not a bad sign; rather, the severity of death upon righteous servants occurs so that their ranks may be elevated and they may attain higher statuses with Allah, the Exalted.
Wallahu al-musta‘an.
