Narrated Sahl: Allah's Apostle said, "I have been sent and the Hour (is at hand) as these two," showing his two fingers and sticking (separating) them out.

Hadith Commentary:
The meaning is that there is now no interval between me and the Day of Judgment for any new prophet or messenger, and my ummah is the last ummah; the Day of Judgment will occur upon it.

Hadith Commentary:
Until the time of Kirmani, seven hundred and eighty years had passed since the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Now, fourteen hundred years have been completed, so what then is the meaning of this nearness?
The answer is that this nearness is in relation to the time that passed from the era of Adam (alayhis salam) up to the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
That was a period of thousands of years. Or, by nearness, it is meant that between me and the Day of Judgment, no new prophet with a new law (shari‘ah) is going to come, and ‘Isa (alayhis salam), who will return to the world near the Day of Judgment, will not bring any new law (shari‘ah).
He will follow the Muhammadan law (shari‘ah). Therefore, the objection of the Qadianis (Mirzais) regarding the return of ‘Isa (alayhis salam) as a challenge to the doctrine of the finality of Prophethood is completely incorrect.

Hadith Commentary:
That is, between the Day of Judgment and the sending of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), now only as much distance remains as there is between these two fingers. The example of existence from the beginning to the end of the world has been given with the fingers, and the meaning is that most of the time has already passed, and what remains is a very short period.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
The middle finger is slightly ahead, and the index finger is behind it. The meaning is that I am a little ahead, and soon after me, the Hour (Qiyamah) will come.
Another meaning could be that just as these fingers are joined together, likewise I and the Hour are joined, i.e., between me and the Hour, Allah Ta’ala will not send any messenger or prophet.
➋
Some scholars have tried to determine the lifespan of this Ummah from this hadith, but it has proven fruitless because the knowledge of when the Hour will occur is with Allah alone.
And Allah knows best.
