Hadith 6492

Narrated Ghailan: Anas said "You people do (bad) deeds (commit sins) which seem in your eyes as tiny (minute) than hair while we used to consider those (very deeds) during the life-time of the Prophet as destructive sins."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Whether a sin is minor or major, a believing servant should ensure that his character is not tainted by it. The only difference between minor and major sins is that one is like a more venomous snake and the other is less venomous. Just as we flee from even a less venomous snake, in the same way, we must always avoid minor sins as well. The reality is that although a minor sin is lesser in comparison to a major sin, Allah Ta’ala is still displeased by it, and there will also be accountability for it in the Hereafter. In this regard, no sin is insignificant.

(2)
It is narrated from Aisha radi Allahu anha that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Aisha! Make a special effort to protect yourself from those sins which are generally considered insignificant and trivial, for on the Day of Resurrection there will also be accountability for them before Allah Ta’ala.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Zuhd, Hadith: 4243)
Although in this hadith the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam addressed Aisha radi Allahu anha, in reality, this warning is for all men and women. Just think! When even the household of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam needs to be cautious and concerned, then how can there be any room for negligence and shortcoming on our part?
Wallahu al-musta‘an

(3)
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam described the seriousness of minor sins in a parabolic manner:
“Continue to avoid minor sins as well. The example of these sins is like a people who camped in a valley; one man brought a stick from the forest for firewood, another also brought a stick, until so much firewood was gathered that they could bake their bread with it. Indeed, minor sins too can throw a person into the pit of destruction.”
