Hadith 6478

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet; said, "A slave (of Allah) may utter a word which pleases Allah without giving it much importance, and because of that Allah will raise him to degrees (of reward): a slave (of Allah) may utter a word (carelessly) which displeases Allah without thinking of its gravity and because of that he will be thrown into the Hell-Fire."

Hadith Commentary:
Sometimes a person speaks in such a way without considering the consequences that result from it, and as a consequence, he enters Hellfire. Therefore, in the Shariah, great importance has been given to the use of the tongue.

It is mentioned in the hadith:
“When a person wakes up in the morning, all his limbs humbly plead with the tongue, saying: ‘Fear Allah concerning us, for we are dependent upon you. If you are upright, we will also be upright; if you go astray, we too will go astray.’” (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi: Az-Zuhd, Hadith: 2407)

In another hadith, the special quality of the heart is mentioned, that the soundness of a person’s limbs depends upon his heart.

There is no contradiction between the two, because the real status belongs to the heart, but among the apparent limbs, since the tongue is its interpreter, the nature of both has been described as above.

If both of these are sound, then all is well; otherwise, a person’s well-being is not ensured.

Wallahu al-musta‘an (And Allah is the One whose help is sought).

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: Sometimes a person, without thinking, says something in flattery of a ruler, or says something about a Muslim in his presence, which gives the ruler an excuse to kill that person, or he engages in slander and obscene speech, or, without thinking, mocks a religious ruling in jest, or makes fun of it. These things become a cause of his destruction and ruin. For this reason, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) greatly emphasized the protection of the tongue and declared silence to be a means of salvation.

Explanation:
1:
A person, in order to make others laugh or to entertain them, says something with his tongue that incurs Allah’s displeasure, or he utters fabricated and false statements, and he does not consider it objectionable to say such things, even though it is sinful and deserving of punishment. In reality, due to this statement of his, he becomes deserving of the punishment of Hellfire. Thus, it is clear that one should not make jokes or say things to amuse others that are sinful or lead to punishment.
