Hadith 6469

And Sufyan bin ‘Uyaynah said: “No verse of the Qur’an has been as hard upon me as this verse (of Surah Al-Ma’idah) «لستم على شىء حتى تقيموا التوراة والإنجيل وما أنزل إليكم من ربكم‏»: ‘O people close to the Prophet! Your way (religion) is nothing unless you fully act upon the Torah and the Gospel and the Books that have been sent down to you.’”
Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, Verily Allah created Mercy. The day He created it, He made it into one hundred parts. He withheld with Him ninety-nine parts, and sent its one part to all His creatures. Had the non-believer known of all the Mercy which is in the Hands of Allah, he would not lose hope of entering Paradise, and had the believer known of all the punishment which is present with Allah, he would not consider himself safe from the Hell-Fire."

Hadith Commentary:
This is precisely the hope and fear between which faith exists—hope that is complete and fear that is also full.
Allahumma arzuqna, ameen.
No matter how many righteous deeds a believer performs, he is always fearful that perhaps his good deeds have not been accepted in the Divine Court, and perhaps his end may be a bad one.
Abu Uthman said: To continue committing sins and then to have hope of salvation is a sign of wretchedness. The scholars have said that in a state of health, one should let fear prevail over his heart, and at the time of death, he should have greater hope in Allah’s mercy and grace.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
No matter how many righteous deeds a believer performs, he always remains apprehensive.
Perhaps my good deeds have not been accepted in the court of Allah, and perhaps my end will not be upon faith.
This very hope and fear is what lies between faith.
Hope is also complete, and fear is also full.
In the Noble Qur’an, the attribute of Allah’s servants is described in these words:
“They hope for their Lord’s mercy and fear His punishment.” (: Bani Isra’il 17:57)
Once, Aisha radi Allahu anha asked the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam regarding the following verse:
“Those who give whatever they give, yet their hearts tremble with fear because they are to return to their Lord.” (: Al-Mu’minun 23:60)
She asked:
Those who spend in the way of Allah, what is it that makes them fearful? Do they drink wine or steal? The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied:
“O daughter of al-Siddiq! It is not that, rather they are those who fast, pray, and give charity, yet they fear that perhaps their deeds will not be accepted.
These are the ones who hasten towards good deeds and are foremost in them.” (Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Tafsir al-Qur’an, Hadith: 3175)
(2)
In any case, to persist in sinning and then to hope for salvation is a sign of wretchedness.
A Muslim should let fear dominate his heart during good health, and at the time of death, he should place his hope in Allah’s mercy and grace.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:

A mare showing such mercy to her foal is also a marvel of divine power. However, there are many people in the world who do not know mercy and kindness at all; rather, they persist in oppression at all times. They should remember that soon they will face the consequences of their injustices. This is the law of nature: "So the roots of the people who did wrong were cut off. And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds." ()

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The wisdom in presenting the example of the horse is that, compared to other animals, the horse shows greater affection and kindness toward its offspring. The horse’s mercy toward its young is a marvel of divine power.

(2)
There are so many people in the world who do not have a beating heart in their chest, but rather a piece of stone. They do not know how to show mercy and kindness to others; instead, they are constantly inflicting oppression and cruelty upon others. They should know that they will soon witness their fate in this world. Allah the Exalted has said:
“And whoever among you does wrong, We shall make him taste a severe punishment.” ()
In one narration of this hadith, these words are mentioned:
“If the disbeliever were to know how much mercy is with Allah, he would not despair of entering Paradise.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Riqaq, Hadith: 6469)
However, on the Day of Resurrection, Allah’s mercy will be reserved exclusively for the people of faith; the disbeliever will have no share in it.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: In this world, only one portion of mercy is manifested, from which all creation is benefiting, and on the Day of Resurrection, only the believers will be deserving of mercy—so how vast and universal will its benefit be then!

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: In this hadith, in order to explain the vastness and abundance of Allah’s mercy, mercy has been divided into one hundred parts, of which ninety-nine are with Allah, and all of creation—which is innumerable—has only one part. Otherwise, in reality, Allah’s mercy is unlimited, while the mercy of all creation is limited, and there can be no comparison between the limited and the unlimited. The mercy of creation is called tenderness of heart, and anger is the name for the heat and agitation that arises in the blood. However, it is not possible to know the nature and state of Allah’s mercy and anger; they are in accordance with His highest and most exalted majesty.

1:
The manifestation of these (99) mercies will be shown by Allah, the Exalted, to His servants on the Day of Resurrection.
From this, one can estimate the mercy of Allah towards His servants.
However, this mercy is also conditional upon the absence of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and upon repentance and seeking forgiveness.
Otherwise, even without repentance, Allah can manifest His mercy if He wills,
“And He forgives whatever is less than that for whom He wills,”
but with regard to the one who commits shirk, there is no dealing of mercy without repentance:
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners should be associated with Him.”

Benefits and Issues:

The feeling of compassion and mercy among the creation for one another is created by Allah.
Therefore, this too is a creation.
Allah’s mercy is an attribute of Allah, which is uncreated.

Allah has countless types of creation, and it is impossible for humans to estimate the number of individuals of each type.
All the different kinds and types of creatures that have been created up to now,
and all those that will be created until the Day of Resurrection—
if the collective compassion and mercy of all of them were gathered together,
it would have no significance compared to Allah’s mercy.

The purpose of mentioning one hundred parts of mercy is to give an idea of the boundless vastness of Allah’s mercy.
The Being who has placed the feeling of mercy in every creature—even animals and birds show such compassion to their offspring that they risk their own lives to save them—then how limitless must be the mercy of that Creator? It cannot even be imagined.

On the Day of Resurrection, just as Allah’s attribute of wrath and attribute of justice will be manifested, in the same way, His attribute of mercy will also be manifested without limit or measure.
