Hadith 6447

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d As-Sa`id: A man passed by Allah's Apostle and the Prophet asked a man sitting beside him, "What is your opinion about this (passer-by)?" He replied, "This (passer-by) is from the noble class of people. By Allah, if he should ask for a lady's hand in marriage, he ought to be given her in marriage, and if he intercedes for somebody, his intercession will be accepted. Allah's Apostle kept quiet, and then another man passed by and Allah's Apostle asked the same man (his companion) again, "What is your opinion about this (second) one?" He said, "O Allah's Apostle! This person is one of the poor Muslims. If he should ask a lady's hand in marriage, no-one will accept him, and if he intercedes for somebody, no one will accept his intercession, and if he talks, no-one will listen to his talk." Then Allah's Apostle said, "This (poor man) is better than such a large number of the first type (i.e. rich men) as to fill the earth."

Hadith Commentary:
By "poverty" is meant the lack of wealth and possessions.
However, when accompanied by contentment of the heart, this poverty is praiseworthy and in accordance with the Sunnah.
It was the way of the Prophets and the friends of Allah (awliya). But if poverty is accompanied by greed and covetousness in the heart, then the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sought refuge with Allah from such poverty.
May Allah protect every Muslim from neediness (Ameen).
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), upon seeing wealth, said that even if the whole world were filled with such wealthy, arrogant, disbelievers, a single sincere believer who outwardly appears poor is better than all of them.
From this hadith, the evil of those capitalists who, like Qarun, remain arrogant, becomes clear.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Upon seeing this wealthy man, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
If the entire world were filled with such wealthy, arrogant people, even then a single sincere believing person—who outwardly appears poor—is better and superior to all of them.

(2)
From this hadith, there emerges an aspect of condemnation for those capitalists who live their lives like Qarun and remain arrogant. However, if along with poverty there is contentment of the heart (ghina), then such destitution is greatly beloved to Allah, the Exalted.
This poverty is the way (sunnah) of the Prophets (alayhimus-salam), the friends of Allah (awliya), and the pious (atqiya) of the Ummah. But if poverty is accompanied by greed, avarice, and covetousness, then the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sought refuge from such poverty. Furthermore, this type of poverty does not mean that a person should begin begging; rather, that poor person is worthy of honor and respect who is content with what Allah, the Exalted, has given him, is patient over it, and does not utter any word of complaint. Moreover, he should make every possible effort and strive to earn lawful (halal) and pure sustenance, and should not allow the humiliation of asking from people to come near him.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
It is understood from this that, in reality, piety (religiousness) is what is necessary in compatibility (kafa’ah); no matter how wealthy an irreligious man may be, he cannot be considered a suitable match (kafu) for a pious woman.
The same ruling applies to men as well.
The meaning of “better” here is that, even if all the people of the world were assumed to be like that wealthy person, this single poor individual would still surpass them all in rank.
In another hadith, it is mentioned that poor, pious people will enter Paradise five hundred years before the wealthy.
Allahumma aj‘alna minhum, ameen, this is indeed true.
“O humble one, do not look down upon the people of this world with contempt, for what do you know—perhaps among them is one who is accepted (by Allah).”

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The meaning of "better" here is that, hypothetically, even if the world were filled with such wealthy people, this single poor person would surpass them in rank.
In another hadith it is stated:
Pious poor people will enter Paradise five hundred years before the wealthy.
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-‘Ilm, Hadith: 3666)
(2)
From this hadith, it is understood that no matter how wealthy an irreligious man may be, he cannot be considered equal to a religious woman; rather, a pious poor man is to be preferred over him.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes:
The superiority of the poor person mentioned in the hadith over the wealthy person mentioned is established, but this does not mean that every poor person is superior to every kind of wealthy person.
(Fath al-Bari: 9/171)
(3)
The relevance of the hadith to the chapter heading is that, due to his religiosity, this poor man is shown to be superior to the wealthy, such that he can be considered a suitable match for any woman.
In any case, piety is given precedence in every respect.

Benefits and Issues:

A poor Muslim, even if he is unknown and holds no status in the eyes of the people of the world, is, in the sight of Allah, better than all the people of the world who are deprived of faith and piety.

With Allah, the real importance and value lies in faith (iman) and piety (taqwa), not in wealth, grandeur, lineage, clan, or ancestry.

For marriage, one should choose righteous men and righteous women, even if they are poor.
A poor, righteous person is equal to a wealthy person, but a wealthy person with corrupt beliefs or bad habits is not equal to a righteous person.
