Hadith 6440

'Ubayy said (referring to the hadith above), "We considered this as a saying from the Qur'an till the Surah (beginning with): "The mutual rivalry (for piling up of worldly things) diverts you' (102:1) was revealed."

Hadith Commentary:
Some of the Companions understood the wording of the hadith (If the son of Adam had a valley of gold...) to be from the Qur'an itself.
However, from Surah Alhakum At-Takathur, they realized that these are not Qur'anic words, but rather this is a Prophetic hadith whose meaning has been conveyed in the noble Qur'an's Surah Alhakum At-Takathur.
This surah is extremely moving, but it requires recitation with presence of heart.
May Allah grant us success.
Ameen.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The words of the hadith (If the son of Adam had a valley full of gold...) were thought by some of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) to be from the Qur’an itself. However, when Surah At-Takathur was revealed, the secret was unveiled that these are not the words of the Qur’an, but rather a Prophetic hadith whose meaning is expressed in Surah At-Takathur. This is because the meaning of the noble verse is:
“You have been distracted by the abundance of wealth until you reached the graves.” (At-Takathur: 102/1, 2)

(2)
Abu Waqid Al-Laythi (radi Allahu anhu) says that we used to be present with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and when revelation would descend, he would convey it to us. One day he said:
Allah, the Exalted, says:
“We have given wealth so that you may establish prayer and give zakat (obligatory charity). If the son of Adam had one valley, he would seek a second valley.” (Musnad Ahmad: 5/219)
