Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: Allah's Apostle said, "The thing I am afraid of most for your sake, is the worldly blessings which Allah will bring forth to you." It was said, "What are the blessings of this world?" The Prophet said, "The pleasures of the world." A man said, "Can the good bring forth evil?" The Prophet kept quiet for a while till we thought that he was being inspired divinely. Then he started removing the sweat from his forehead and said," Where is the questioner?" That man said, "I (am present)." Abu Sa`id added: We thanked the man when the result (of his question) was such. The Prophet said, "Good never brings forth but good. This wealth (of the world) is (like) green and sweet (fruit), and all the vegetation which grows on the bank of a stream either kills or nearly kills the animal that eats too much of it, except the animal that eats the Khadira (a kind of vegetation). Such an animal eats till its stomach is full and then it faces the sun and starts ruminating and then it passes out dung and urine and goes to eat again. This worldly wealth is (like) sweet (fruit), and if a person earns it (the wealth) in a legal way and spends it properly, then it is an excellent helper, and whoever earns it in an illegal way, he will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied."

Hadith Commentary:
This is an indication towards moderation, which has been explained through the example of grazing animals. Those animals that eat greenery immoderately also become ill. The same is the case with the world; here, moderation is necessary in every circumstance.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) indicated towards moderation by giving the example of an animal that grazes on grass with moderation, and the animal that eats this grass immoderately either perishes due to indigestion or is seized by illness. The same is the example of the wealth and adornments of this world. Here too, moderation and balance are extremely necessary in every circumstance.

It is stated in the Noble Qur’an:
“These wealth and children are but the adornment of the worldly life, but the enduring good deeds are better in reward with your Lord and better in hope.” ( Al-Kahf: 46)
This means that wealth and children are certainly a source of interest for a person, but one should not become so enamored with these things that he forgets Allah Ta’ala and the life of the Hereafter, making only these things the sole objective of his life. Rather, these things should be utilized in the path of Allah to strive to improve one’s Hereafter. Accordingly, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) once said:
“Whoever fears Allah, there is no harm for him in being wealthy; good health for a person of taqwa (God-consciousness) is even better than wealth, and cheerfulness is also among the blessings of Allah.” (Musnad Ahmad: 5/372)
From this hadith, it is understood that if wealth and affluence are accompanied by taqwa, then there is no danger to the religion in it. In fact, if Allah Ta’ala grants the ability, then this very wealth can become a means of reaching the highest ranks of Paradise. However, there is no doubt that along with wealth, the ability to be concerned for the Hereafter and to follow the Shari’ah is granted to very few people; most people become intoxicated by their wealth and go astray.
And Allah is the One whose help is sought.
