Hadith Commentary:
The remembrance of Allah is, as it were, the manifestation of life, and forgetting Allah is, as it were, the darkness of death.
Some have said that those who do not remember Allah can neither benefit nor harm anyone.
There are many verses in the Noble Qur’an regarding the remembrance of Allah; in one place it is stated:
﴿O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance﴾ (: Al-Ahzab: 41)
O you who believe! Remember Allah abundantly.
In one hadith, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to a companion that your tongue should always remain moist with the remembrance of Allah.
Never being heedless of the remembrance of Allah in any circumstance is the hallmark of the people of Allah.
The essence of prayer (salah), fasting (sawm), pilgrimage (hajj), almsgiving (zakat), speech, remembrance, and all forms of dhikr is this very remembrance of Allah, for which the words of glorification (tasbih), praise (tahmid), magnification (takbir), and declaration of Allah’s oneness (tahlil) are the best means.
Recitation of the Noble Qur’an, study of the Prophetic hadith, and abundant sending of blessings (salawat) upon the Prophet are all forms of the remembrance of Allah.
The greatest remembrance is that one remembers Allah in all commands and prohibitions:
He fulfills the commands and abstains from the prohibitions.
The status of the gathering of those who remember Allah is such that even a person who comes to them for some work or purpose and sits with them, even if he does not participate in their remembrance, is also forgiven by the blessing of their dhikr.
From this hadith, the great virtue of the people of Allah and those who remember Allah is established, that even one who sits with them for some need is not deprived of their benefit and blessing.
Now, it is regrettable for those people who consider those who sat with the Prophet of Mercy sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the noble companions who accompanied him in travel and residence to be deprived of Paradise and unfortunate.
These wretched ones will themselves be deprived.
Once, Ka‘b al-Aslami, the servant of the Noble Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, was told by him: “Ask, what do you want?” He said, “I desire your companionship in Paradise.”
He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Anything else?” He replied, “That is all.”
He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Then help me by making abundant prostration (sujud).”
(: Sahih Muslim, Book of Prayer, Chapter on Abundance of Prostration)
May Allah grant every Muslim this rank of companionship.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
From this hadith, it is understood that remembering Allah is, in a sense, the manifestation of life, and forgetting Allah is akin to oppression and death. Those who do not remember Allah are like the dead, who can neither benefit nor harm anyone. In the Noble Qur’an, Allah has commanded the people of faith:
“O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance.” (: al-Ahzab: 41)
(2)
Recitation of the Qur’an, study of hadith, and abundant sending of blessings and peace (salat and salam) are all various forms of the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah. The greatest remembrance is that a person remembers Allah in all commands and prohibitions: he fulfills the commands and abstains from the prohibitions. It is narrated from Abu al-Darda’ radi Allahu anhu that he said the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Shall I not inform you of the best of your deeds, which is most increasing in reward with your Lord, which raises your ranks, which is better for you than spending gold and silver, and better for you than meeting your enemy so that you strike their necks and they strike your necks?”
The Companions radi Allahu anhum said:
“Why not? Please do inform us.”
He said:
“It is the remembrance (dhikr) of Allah.”

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The life of homes is through the remembrance of Allah, and the most important and greatest means of remembering Allah is prayer (salah). Therefore, the house whose inhabitants are those who perform prayer, and who establish prayer within the home, their house will be alive, and they themselves will also be alive.
But those whose household members do not perform prayer—their house is dead, and spiritually and morally, its inhabitants are also dead.
Life is attained through faith (iman), and prayer is the sign and identification of faith.
