Hadith 6355

Narrated `Aisha: The boys used to be brought to the Prophet and he used to invoke for Allah's blessing upon them. Once an infant was brought to him and it urinated on his clothes. He asked for water and poured it over the place of the urine and did not wash his clothes.

Hadith Footnote:
This (child) was either Hasan or Husayn, the son of Umm Falis.
It is understood from this that pouring water over the urine of a suckling infant is sufficient.

Hadith Commentary:

The child was brought immediately after birth into the presence [of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam].
He performed tahnik, that is, he softened a piece of date in his blessed mouth and put it into the child's mouth.
From this, the subject matter of the chapter is established.
If there is no intention to perform 'aqiqah, then it is permissible to perform circumcision (khitan) and tahnik immediately after birth.
If 'aqiqah is to be performed, then these acts should be done on the day of 'aqiqah.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one narration, it is mentioned that newborn children were brought to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he would supplicate for goodness and blessings for them. A child was brought, and he urinated on the Prophet’s clothes. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam called for water and poured it over the garment; he did not wash it. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Da‘awat, Hadith: 6355) In another narration, it is mentioned that when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam seated the child in his lap to give him tahnik (chewing a date and placing it in the child’s mouth), the child urinated, and the Prophet poured water over that spot. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Adab, Hadith: 6002) (2)
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah’s intent is that if there is no intention to perform the ‘aqiqah (sacrifice for a newborn), then the child should be named immediately after birth and the tahnik should also be done at that time. However, if ‘aqiqah is to be performed, then these acts should be done on the seventh day.
(3)
This hadith also establishes that the newborn was brought to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam immediately after birth, and he chewed a piece of date in his blessed mouth, softened it, and placed it in the child’s throat.
And Allah knows best.
