Hadith 6350

Narrated Qais: I came to Khabbab who had been branded with seven brands over his `Abdomen, and I heard him saying, "If the Prophet: had not forbidden us to invoke (Allah) for death, I would have invoked Allah for it."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Hazrat Khabbab bin Aratt radi Allahu anhu was suffering from severe hardship at that time. Due to the intensity of his suffering, he spoke in this manner. In any case, supplicating for death is prohibited; rather, one should supplicate to Allah Ta’ala for a long life through which the happiness of both worlds may be attained. This is the reason that, on the Day of Judgment, the righteous individuals who lived long lives will, in terms of rank, be ahead of the martyrs.
(2)
Supplicating for death is prohibited because it implies ingratitude towards Allah Ta’ala and expresses displeasure with divine decree (qada wa qadar), which does not befit a Muslim. However, if there is a fear of losing one’s religion and faith (din wa iman), then there is no harm in wishing for death, as will be evident from the following hadith.
