Hadith 6324

Narrated Hudhaifa: Whenever the Prophet intended to go to bed, he would recite: "Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya (With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live)." And when he woke up from his sleep, he would say: "Al-hamdu lil-lahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana; wa ilaihi an-nushur (All the Praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection). "

Hadith Commentary: Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman radi Allahu anhu was among the close companions of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and was the keeper of his secrets and mysteries. He passed away in Mada’in forty days after the martyrdom of Uthman radi Allahu anhu in the year 35 AH—may Allah be pleased with him and grant him contentment, ameen.

It is said: “Sleep is the brother of death,” and in the Qur’an as well, the word “tawaffa” (taking the soul) is used for sleep. Allah says: “And He it is Who takes your souls by night and knows what you have committed by day, then He raises you up therein that a specified term may be fulfilled...”

Hadith Commentary:
In this hadith, there is no mention of the right hand or the right cheek. In fact, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah, by means of this chapter heading, has alluded to those narrations in which the right hand and the right cheek are explicitly mentioned. Thus, in one narration, it is stated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, when sleeping, would place his right hand under his right cheek.
(Musnad Ahmad: 5/387)
Similarly, it is narrated from Hafsah radi Allahu anha that when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would sleep on his bed, he would place his right hand under his right cheek and recite the following supplication three times:
(اللهم قني عذابَكَ يومَ تَبعثُ عبادَكَ)
“O Allah! On the day You resurrect Your servants, protect me from Your punishment.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Adab, Hadith: 5045)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has also referenced the hadith of Al-Bara’ ibn Azib radi Allahu anhu.

Explanation:
1:
I die (i.e., sleep) taking Your name alone, and I live (i.e., wake up) taking Your name alone.

2:
All praise is for Allah who gave life to my soul (my self) after He had caused it to die (temporarily), and to Him is the return. In some narrations, the wording is also reported as:
(al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī aḥyā nafsī ba‘da mā amātahā wa ilayhi an-nushūr) — the meaning is the same.
