Narrated `Amr: Ibn `Umar said, "By Allah, I have not put a brick over a brick (i.e. constructed a building) or planted any date-palm tree since the death of the Prophet." Sufyan (the sub narrator) said, "I told this narration (of Ibn `Umar) to one of his (Ibn `Umar's) relatives, and he said, 'By Allah, he did build (something.' "Sufyan added, "I said, 'He must have said (the above narration) before he built."

Hadith Commentary:
The reconciliation presented by Sufyan al-Thawri rahimahullah is entirely appropriate: the statement of Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma was made before he built a house; later, he did build a house, as attested by his own family members.
Building a house larger than one’s need is a source of distress, as nowadays people have constructed grand and lofty buildings.
Planting a garden is better, as it is beneficial.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Not every kind of construction and gardening is blameworthy; rather, the hadith mentions that such futile constructions which are undertaken merely out of pride and boasting, beyond necessity, become a cause of woe. This is as we see nowadays, where people have built large and tall buildings. The same applies to gardens; however, those buildings or gardens which are for some benefit will be a source of reward and merit.
(2)
It should be noted that the explanation and reconciliation provided by Sufyan al-Thawri rahimahullah appears entirely appropriate: that the statement of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma mentioned here pertains to the time before he built his house; later, he did construct his own house, as has been stated by his own family members.
And Allah knows best, and His knowledge is most complete.
