Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that among the signs of the Hour is that shepherds will begin to boast in buildings, that is, they will build tall structures and take pride in them.

Narrated Ibn `Umar: During the life-time of the Prophet I built a house with my own hands so that it might protect me from the rain and shade me from the sun; and none of Allah's creatures assisted me in building it.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The intention of Abdullah bin Umar radi Allahu anhuma is to express his poverty during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, that he had constructed his hut only to the extent of necessity. After that, those who were once destitute and impoverished became wealthy, and began to take interest in constructing buildings without need. Thus, it is mentioned in the hadith that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
"Building (construction) will be a calamity for its builder, except for that building for which there is no alternative."
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Adab, Hadith: 5237)
(2)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah says:
The ahadith in which the condemnation of construction is mentioned refer to such buildings that are constructed without necessity, merely for display and to show off. However, those buildings which are for residence and protection from heat and cold are certainly not intended, because these are for human need.
