Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In some narrations, it is mentioned that at the time of the passing of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the age of Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) was ten years. However, the correct position is that at that time his age was thirteen years, because Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) was born in Sha‘b Abi Talib, when the Quraysh had imposed a boycott on Banu Hashim. This incident occurred three years before the Hijrah, and he remained in Madinah Tayyibah for ten years, therefore the narration stating thirteen years is the reliable one. His circumcision (khitan) took place before the passing of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and after the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada‘).

(2)
It should be noted that among the Arabs, women also underwent circumcision (khitan). Thus, Umm ‘Atiyyah (radi Allahu anha) reports that in Madinah Tayyibah there was a woman who used to perform circumcision. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to her:
“Do not cut deeply, for that is more pleasurable for the woman and more desirable for the husband.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Adab, Hadith: 5271)
Since among us, the people of the East, this practice is unfamiliar, it is therefore not obligatory for women. However, where there is a perceived need for it, or where it is customary, it may be practiced.
And Allah knows best.
