Hadith 6268

Hudbah bin Khalid narrated to us, he said: Hammam bin Yahya narrated to us, he said: Qatadah bin Di‘amah narrated to us, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), and from Mu‘adh (may Allah be pleased with him), and then he narrated the same aforementioned hadith.
Narrated Abu Dhar: While I was walking with the Prophet at the Hurra of Medina in the evening, the mountain of Uhud appeared before us. The Prophet said, "O Abu Dhar! I would not like to have gold equal to Uhud (mountain) for me, unless nothing of it, not even a single Dinar remains of it with me, for more than one day or three days, except that single Dinar which I will keep for repaying debts. I will spend all of it (the whole amount) among Allah's slaves like this and like this and like this." The Prophet pointed out with his hand to illustrate it and then said, "O Abu Dhar!" I replied, "Labbaik wa Sa`daik, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Those who have much wealth (in this world) will be the least rewarded (in the Hereafter) except those who do like this and like this (i.e., spend their money in charity)." Then he ordered me, "Remain at your place and do not leave it, O Abu Dhar, till I come back." He went away till he disappeared from me. Then I heard a voice and feared that something might have happened to Allah's Apostle, and I intended to go (to find out) but I remembered the statement of Allah's Apostle that I should not leave, my place, so I kept on waiting (and after a while the Prophet came), and I said to him, "O Allah's Apostle, I heard a voice and I was afraid that something might have happened to you, but then I remembered your statement and stayed (there). The Prophet said, "That was Gabriel who came to me and informed me that whoever among my followers died without joining others in worship with Allah, would enter Paradise." I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?" He said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft."

Hadith Commentary:
Several fundamental points are mentioned in the hadith. For example, a person who possesses pure monotheism (tawhid) and avoids polytheism (shirk) will not remain in Hell forever due to any major sin (kabirah). It is also possible that Allah, due to the blessing of tawhid, may forgive all his sins.

At the end of the hadith, a particular conduct of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is mentioned, which will always serve as a guiding light for the people of the world. He is the first person in the world who, through his words and actions, struck such a blow against capitalism and the worship of wealth that today the entire world is following that path. As Iqbal (rahimahullah) has said:
The era of capitalism has passed,
The spectacle of the juggler has ended.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In this hadith, a fundamental principle is stated: whoever adopts pure monotheism (tawhid) and passes away while having kept away from polytheism (shirk), will not remain in Hellfire forever due to any major sin (kabirah) he may have committed.
It is also possible that, by virtue of tawhid, Allah may forgive all his sins and admit him into Paradise without him ever entering Hellfire.

(2)
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah intends to establish from this hadith that although the phrase "labbayk" is devotional (‘ibadah), when a person of virtue calls, one may use this word in response, just as in this hadith Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu used this phrase when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam called him.

(3)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used the words "labbayk wa sa‘dayk" in response to a woman’s call.
