‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me the Tashahhud while my two palms were between the palms of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). And Ka’b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I entered the mosque and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting there. Talhah bin ‘Ubaidullah got up quickly and came towards me and shook hands with me and congratulated me (on the acceptance of my repentance).
Narrated Qatada: I asked Anas, "Was it a custom of the companions of the Prophet to shake hands with one another?" He said, "Yes."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
From this hadith, the practice of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) of shaking hands when meeting each other is established; when they used to meet, they would shake hands. There is great virtue mentioned regarding this in the hadith. Thus, it is narrated from al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib (radi Allahu anhuma) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“When two Muslims meet and then shake hands, before they part ways, both of them are forgiven.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Adab, Hadith: 5212)
(2)
In any case, Muslims meeting each other happily and shaking hands is a means of increasing mutual love and of forgiveness of sins from Allah, the Exalted. Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has written that from this general practice of shaking hands, an unrelated woman and a handsome beardless youth are excluded. One should not shake hands with them, because countless tribulations arise from this.
