Hadith 6245

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: While I was present in one of the gatherings of the Ansar, Abu Musa came as if he was scared, and said, "I asked permission to enter upon `Umar three times, but I was not given the permission, so I returned." (When `Umar came to know about it) he said to Abu Musa, "Why did you not enter?'. Abu Musa replied, "I asked permission three times, and I was not given it, so I returned, for Allah's Apostle said, "If anyone of you asks the permission to enter thrice, and the permission is not given, then he should return.' " `Umar said, "By Allah! We will ask Abu Musa to bring witnesses for it." (Abu Musa went to a gathering of the Ansar and said). "Did anyone of you hear this from the Prophet ?" Ubai bin Ka`b said, "By Allah, none will go with you but the youngest of the people (as a witness)." (Abu Sa`id) was the youngest of them, so I went with Abu Musa and informed `Umar that the Prophet had said so. (See Hadith No. 277, Vol. 3)

Hadith Commentary:
After this testimony, Umar radi Allahu anhu immediately accepted this hadith. This is precisely the characteristic of a believer—radi Allahu anhu wa ardah. Thus, the hearing (sama‘) of Basr from Abu Sa‘id is established. From this narration, it is also proven that the narration of a single narrator, when he is trustworthy (thiqa), is authoritative (hujjah), and analogy (qiyas) will be abandoned in its favor. This is the position of the Ahl al-Hadith.

In some versions, this additional phrase appears: “Qala Abu ‘Abd Allah: Arada ‘Umar an tatabbat al-tathabbuta li-alla yujiz khabar al-wahid”—that is, Imam Bukhari said that when Umar radi Allahu anhu asked Abu Musa to bring a witness, his intention was to further strengthen the hadith, not because Umar radi Allahu anhu did not consider a hadith narrated by a single Companion to be authentic.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The prescribed Islamic method for seeking permission to enter someone's house is to stand to one side of the door and say salam (greeting of peace) three times, then seek permission. Even the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to observe this practice.
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Adab, Hadith: 5186)
In response to a knock, the one knocking should state his name or known identity; saying "It's me, it's me" is contrary to etiquette and is an insufficient introduction.
One should not display disrespect or rudeness when knocking or ringing the bell.
If permission or a response is not received, one should return without undue annoyance, as is evident from the incident of Abu Musa Ash'ari (radi Allahu anhu).
(2)
The strictness of Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was also appropriate for the occasion, so that people would not begin to attribute things to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) without certainty and trust. Although Umar (radi Allahu anhu) admitted his own shortcoming and made amends for the dispute that occurred with Abu Musa Ash'ari (radi Allahu anhu), thus he said:
"Did the statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remain hidden from me? Yes, my commercial engagements in the market kept me occupied. In any case, O Abu Musa! Whenever you wish, come by saying salam and do not seek permission."
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Al-Adab:
Hadith: 5182)
(3)
From another narration, it is known that in Kufa, people used to stand at the door of Abu Musa Ash'ari (radi Allahu anhu) when he was the governor of Kufa.
Umar (radi Allahu anhu) wanted to train him in such a way that just as you felt discomfort from standing outside, you should also be mindful of the discomfort of others.
(Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Hadith: 1073)
In addition, Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was also occupied at that time with the affairs of his caliphate.
