Hadith 6225

Narrated Anas: Two men sneezed before the Prophet and he said Tashmit to one of them, while he did not say Tashmit to the other. So that man said, "O Allah's Apostle! You said Tashmit to that fellow but you did not say Tashmit to me. "The Prophet said, "That man praised Allah, but you did not praise Allah."

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
The following cases are exceptions regarding responding to a sneeze:
➊ If a person sneezes but does not say "Alhamdulillah," he should not be responded to, as mentioned in the above hadith.
➋ The sneeze of disbelievers and polytheists should also not be responded to, just as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would not respond to the Jews.
➌ One who sneezes due to a cold is also not deserving of a response, as we have written earlier.
➍ During the Friday sermon (khutbah), one should not respond to a sneeze, because listening to the sermon at that time is obligatory.
➎ If someone sneezes during sexual intercourse or while relieving himself, the response may be delayed.

Sahih Muslim Sharh Nawawi
Explanation:
Nawawi rahimahullah said: Its discussion has already passed in the Book of Salam, and according to the Zahiri scholars, replying to a sneeze is obligatory (wajib), and according to Imam Malik rahimahullah, it is a communal obligation (fard kifayah), and according to Shafi'i rahimahullah and most scholars, it is a Sunnah.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: When a person sneezes, the impurities of the brain are expelled, which causes the mind to feel lighter and the body to experience comfort and ease. Therefore, one should praise and thank Allah by saying "alhamdulillah" (all praise is due to Allah), and the listener should supplicate for the sneezer’s goodness and blessings by saying "yarhamuk Allah" (may Allah have mercy on you). If the one who sneezes does not say "alhamdulillah," then it is not necessary to supplicate goodness for him.

Benefits and Issues:
Whoever does not say (alhamdulillah) upon sneezing,
he is no longer deserving of his brother’s response and his supplication.

Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:

➊ The meaning of praising Allah is that the one who sneezes should say "alhamdulillah" (all praise is due to Allah).

➋ The meaning of giving supplication is that the listener should say "yarhamukallah" (may Allah have mercy on you).

➌ Saying "yarhamukallah" as a supplication to the one who says "alhamdulillah" after sneezing is a right of a Muslim upon another Muslim. See: (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Manners, Chapter: What is recommended regarding sneezing and what is disliked regarding yawning, Hadith: 6223).

➍ Not giving supplication to the one who does not say "alhamdulillah" is for the purpose of admonition, so that he does not remain heedless in the future.

Benefit:
From this hadith, it is understood that if someone sneezes and does not praise (Allah), then he should not be given the supplication (yarhamuk Allah). And the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) were greatly concerned about receiving the supplication of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
