Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning, so if someone sneezes and then praises Allah, then it is obligatory on every Muslim who heard him, to say: May Allah be merciful to you (Yar-hamuka-l-lah). But as regards yawning, it is from Satan, so one must try one's best to stop it, if one says 'Ha' when yawning, Satan will laugh at him."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Sneezing is a sign of good health and lightness of temperament; it also causes alertness, attentiveness, and clarity of mind. Allah Ta'ala likes it because when a person sneezes, he says "Alhamdulillah" (all praise is due to Allah).
(2)
From this, it is understood that Allah Ta'ala likes the sneeze that is not due to a cold, because it is not obligatory to respond to the sneeze of a person suffering from a cold. The principle of the Shari'ah is that every good and virtuous thing is attributed to Allah Ta'ala, and every bad condition is attributed to Shaytan; therefore, yawning has been attributed to Shaytan. One way to prevent yawning is that a person should not allow himself to yawn at all; if it does occur, he should place his hand over his mouth, and especially during prayer, he should make a special effort to restrain it.

Hadith Commentary:
He is indeed the enemy of the children of Adam; he becomes pleased when he sees a person’s laziness and indolence.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
When a person eats to satiety, due to overeating, heaviness occurs in the stomach, which leads to yawning, and this causes laziness in the body. The noble Prophets (alayhimus-salam) have been exempted from this, because this state does not occur with them.
(2)
In some narrations, prayer (salah) is mentioned, that during prayer one should restrain stretching (angdaai), because prayer is the servant’s best state; in it, the servant should especially make an effort to restrain it. Otherwise, in every situation, yawning should be restrained. (Fath al-Bari: 10/750)
(3)
In one narration it is stated:
“When yawning, do not make a sound like an animal, for Satan laughs at this.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Iqamat al-Salawat, Hadith: 968)
There are two reasons for Satan’s laughter:
٭ When yawning, the face becomes distorted and a person makes a ‘ha ha’ sound; in this state, Satan mocks the human, saying, ‘What is the state of the master of the universe, and how is he making the sounds of animals?’
٭ He laughs out of happiness because yawning is a sign of laziness and indolence, which Satan likes, since due to laziness a person is deprived of many good deeds.
And Allah knows best.

Benefits and Issues:
➊
Sneezing is a sign of lightness of temperament and good health, whereas yawning is an indication of laziness and heaviness of temperament. In the Shariah, every bad condition is attributed to Shaytan, and every good and beneficial thing is attributed to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
➋
One way to prevent yawning is that a person should not allow himself to yawn at all. Or, if yawning does occur, he should place his hand over his mouth and not make a "ha ha" sound. He should be especially mindful of this during prayer.

Benefit:
In this hadith, it is stated that sneezing is from Allah Ta'ala, because sneezing is a form of mercy, through which a person’s disposition is refreshed. Yawning is a sign of laziness and heedlessness, and it is from Shaytan. Furthermore, this hadith also mentions the etiquettes of yawning: that one should place a hand over the mouth when yawning. The purpose of placing the hand over the mouth is that when a person yawns, his mouth opens and the inside becomes visible; firstly, by placing the hand, the inside of the mouth will not be seen, and secondly, the sound that comes from the mouth while yawning can be controlled.
