Narrated `Abdullah bin Al-Harith bin Naufal: `Abbas bin `Abdul Muttalib said, "O Allah's Apostle! Did you benefit Abu Talib with anything as he used to protect and take care of you, and used to become angry for you?" The Prophet said, "Yes, he is in a shallow place of Fire. But for me he would have been in the lowest part of the Fire."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one narration, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“It is hoped that because of my intercession, he will be placed in such a part of Hell where the fire will reach only up to his ankles, due to which the brain inside his head will boil.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Riqaq, Hadith: 6564)
(2)
Imam al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) has established from both these hadiths that it is permissible to refer to the polytheists and disbelievers by their kunyah (patronymic), as in one hadith the kunyah of Abdullah ibn Ubayy is mentioned as Abu Hubab, and in another hadith the kunyah of the Messenger of Allah’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) uncle is mentioned as Abu Talib.
They were well-known by these kunyahs, so they were referred to by their kunyah instead of their names.
In the Noble Qur’an, Allah the Exalted has mentioned Abu Lahab by his kunyah, as the Exalted says:
“Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he!”
( al-Lahab: 111:1)
He was famous by the kunyah Abu Lahab, so he was mentioned as such.
This is not done out of respect or honor for them, but rather due to their fame by these kunyahs.
(3)
It should be noted that the name of Abu Talib was ‘Abd Manaf, and the name of Abu Lahab was ‘Abd al-‘Uzza.

Hadith Commentary:
This narration is concise.
Elsewhere, it is mentioned that he (the Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, "Yes, I conveyed (the message)."
He is in punishment up to his knees, and if it were not for my intercession, he would have been admitted to the lowest level of Hell.

Hadith Commentary:
For the sake of brevity, the answer of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has not been mentioned in the hadith.
In another narration, its details are given: Did you benefit your uncle Abu Talib in any way, while he used to protect you and would become angry with others for your sake? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:
“Now the punishment of Hell reaches only up to his ankles; if it were not for my intercession, he would have been in the lowest pit of Hell.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Manaqib al-Ansar, Hadith: 3883)
Abu Talib was destroyed by the false honor of his clan.
May Allah, the Exalted, protect us from this.
Ameen

Linguistic Explanation:
«يَحُوْطُكَ» They used to protect you.
«الضَّحْضَاح» Water that flows on the ground and reaches up to the ankles; here, this quantity is used for «استعارةً» for fire.
«الدَّرْك» Layer.
«الْاَسْفَل» The lowest.

Hadith Commentary:
The fact that Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) asked the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) about Abu Talib indicates the weakness of that narration whose content is that when Abu Talib was near death, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) told him to say "La ilaha illallah" (There is no deity but Allah), but he refused.
Then Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) saw his lips moving, so he put his ear close to him, then said to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam):
"O my nephew! He has said the word which you presented to him."
This narration is completely unreliable and cannot be presented in opposition to the hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari.
Another proof that he died upon polytheism (shirk) is that Ali (radi Allahu anhu) informed the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) with these words: "Your uncle, who was astray, has died." So he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Bury him."
Ali (radi Allahu anhu) said: "He died in a state of polytheism."
He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Just bury him."
(Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Jana'iz, Hadith: 3214)
The clear meaning of this hadith is that Abu Talib died in a state of polytheism (shirk).

Benefit:
From this hadith, it is understood that love for the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam will not take a person to Paradise until he accepts Islam. Merely celebrating the festivals (urs) of saints does not please Allah Ta'ala; rather, Allah Ta'ala is pleased when one accepts Islam and acts upon it.
