Hadith 6193

Narrated Sa`id bin Al-Musaiyab: That when his grandfather, Hazn visited the Prophet the Prophet said (to him), "What is your name?" He said, "My name is Hazn." The Prophet said, " But you are Sahl." He said, "I will not change my name with which my father named me." Ibn Al-Musaiyab added: So we have had roughness (in character) ever since.

Hadith Commentary:

This was the punishment for the fact that their grandfather did not accept the name given by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), a name that was entirely good and blessed. Instead, he preferred the name "Huzn" (meaning "grief") that had been given by his forefathers, and for this reason, the subsequent generations also remained afflicted with hardship.

A person's name has a great effect on his life; therefore, one should choose the best possible name for a child.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one narration, the reason for not changing the name is mentioned as follows: "Sahl" (easy) is trampled upon and considered insignificant. (2)
In any case, whatever the reason may be for not changing his name, it is evident from this that a person's name has a significant impact on his life. This is acknowledged by Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib himself, who said that because our grandfather did not accept the statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the effects of sorrow remained evident in our family.
Therefore, children's names should be chosen well. Darussalam has published a book titled "Dictionary of Qur'anic and Islamic Names," which is an excellent book on this subject.
