Hadith 6189

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: A man among us begot a boy whom he named Al-Qasim. The people said (to him), "We will not call you Abul-l-Qasim, nor will we please you by calling you so." The man came to the Prophet and mentioned that to him. The Prophet said to him, "Name your son `Abdur-Rahman."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
Most scholars have said that this prohibition was only during the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) lifetime, because at that time, having the kunyah (patronymic) of Abu al-Qasim would cause him discomfort.
In one narration, it is mentioned that once a person called out, “O Abu al-Qasim.”
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) turned towards him, but the person said, “I was not calling you.” At that time, in order to prevent confusion, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) issued this ruling.

Hadith Commentary:
During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), it was not permissible to adopt the kunyah (patronymic) of Abu al-Qasim.

The reason for this prohibition was that once the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was in the marketplace, and a man called out using the kunyah "Abu al-Qasim." The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) turned around to look. The one who called out said:
"I did not call you, but rather I called so-and-so."
At that time, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade adopting this kunyah.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Buyu', Hadith: 2121)

There is also a narration regarding concession: Ali (radi Allahu anhu) submitted:
"O Messenger of Allah! If a child is born to me after you, may I name him with your name and give him your kunyah?" The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:
"Yes, you may do so."
