Narrated Ibn `Umar: The Prophet said, "Wailakum" (woe to you) or "waihakum" (May Allah be merciful to you)." Shu`ba is not sure as to which was the right word. "Do not become disbelievers after me by cutting the necks of one another."
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Imran Ayyub Lahori
Lexical Explanation:
«اسْتَنصِت» Command silence.
«رِقَاب» is the plural of «رَقَبَة», meaning necks.
Understanding the Hadith:
In this and other similar ahadith where the word "kufr" (disbelief) has been used for certain major sins, the intent is to indicate that these are actions of the disbelievers which Muslims should not commit. It is not meant that the one who commits them becomes a disbeliever, as this is established by the clear evidences from the Book and the Sunnah. Therefore, this and other similar ahadith will be interpreted to mean that the one who commits these acts enters into the realm of disbelief to the extent of that sin, but he does not become a complete disbeliever. Hadith Commentary: The meaning is the same.
Mutual killing and bloodshed is not an Islamic practice; rather, this is the practice of the disbelievers. May Allah grant us the ability to reflect upon this.
