Narrated Jundub: While the Prophet was walking, a stone hit his foot and stumbled and his toe was injured. He then (quoting a poetic verse) said, "You are not more than a toe which has been bathed in blood in Allah's Cause."
Explanation & Benefits

Hadith Commentary:
This statement is rajaz (a type of rhythmic prose), not poetry; the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself did not compose any poetry. However, at times he recited excellent verses composed by other poets. Allah Almighty has spoken the truth: ﴿And We did not teach him poetry, nor is it befitting for him﴾

Hadith Commentary:
This is not poetry, rather it is a rajaz—an extemporaneous utterance that happened to be metrically balanced. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam never composed poetry, because composing poetry involves contemplation and affectation, and such behavior does not befit the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. However, at times it is narrated that he recited the verses of poets, as when he recited this verse of Labid:
(“Ala kullu shay’in ma khala Allah batil”)
Behold! Everything except Allah is perishing.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
The poet’s verse is excellent and based on truth, as will be mentioned in the following hadith.
