Hadith 613

Narrated Yahya as above (586) and added: "Some of my companions told me that Hisham had said, "When the Mu'adh-dhin said, "Haiyi `alassala (come for the prayer)." Muawiya said, "La hawla wala quwata illa billah (There is neither might nor any power except with Allah)" and added, "We heard your Prophet saying the same."

Hadith Commentary:
In the first hadith, there was no clarification regarding what the listener should say in response to "Hayya 'ala as-salah" and "Hayya 'ala al-falah."
For this reason, Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah brought the second hadith narrated by Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu,
in which it has been explained that the response to these words should be: "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established from these narrations that when the muezzin says "Hayya 'ala as-salah" and "Hayya 'ala al-falah," one should respond by saying "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah." In this regard, he has presented the narration of Amir Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu, which is extremely brief. Its details are found in another narration: One day, when Amir Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu was seated on the pulpit, the muezzin gave the call to prayer and said:

"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar." In response, he said, "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar."
When the muezzin said, "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah," he replied, "I also bear witness (to the Oneness of Allah)."
When the muezzin said, "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasul Allah," he replied, "I also bear witness (to the Messengership)."
When the muezzin finished his adhan, he said: "O people! I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, while sitting in this very place, when the muezzin gave the adhan, he said the same words as you have heard me say."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Jumu'ah, Hadith: 914)
However, in this narration, the words that establish Imam Bukhari's intended point are not present.

A narration has been mentioned by Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah, referencing Allamah Isma'ili rahimahullah, which contains further detail. Isa bin Talhah rahimahullah says that once we went to Amir Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu, the muezzin gave the adhan and said:

"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar." Amir Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu also said: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar."
When the muezzin said, "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah," Amir Mu'awiyah said: "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah."
Then when the muezzin said, "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasul Allah," Amir Mu'awiyah radi Allahu anhu also said: "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasul Allah."
Yahya bin Abi Kathir, the narrator, says that one of my companions informed me that when the muezzin said, "Hayya 'ala as-salah," Amir Mu'awiyah said, "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah," and then said: "We have heard this from your Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in this manner."
(Fath al-Bari: 2/123)

(2)
The wisdom behind saying "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" in response to "Hayya 'ala as-salah" and "Hayya 'ala al-falah" is explained as follows: The worshipper is being called to come towards the straight path with both outward and inward attention while living in this world, and to come towards the attainment of the blessings of the Day of Judgment. Therefore, it is appropriate that the response should be: "Due to my weakness and inability, I do not find within myself the strength for this; yes, if Allah the Exalted grants me the ability to avoid evil and come towards goodness, then that is another matter."
(Fath al-Bari: 2/123)

It should be noted that according to a hadith, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself, upon hearing the testimony of the muezzin, used to say, "Wa ana, wa ana."
(Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Adhan, Hadith: 526)
That is, when the muezzin said, "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah," he would say: "I also bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah."
And when the muezzin said, "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasul Allah," he would reply: "I also bear witness that Muhammad, that is, he himself, is the Messenger of Allah the Exalted."
This means that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also used to respond to the adhan.

Benefits:

➊ Hafiz rahimahullah said: We have received this hadith from Hisham mentioned above through several chains, one of which is the narration of Isma‘ili “‘Isa ibn Talhah said: We went to Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu, and the mu’adhdhin gave the call to prayer (adhan) and said:

«اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ»

So Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu said:

«اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ»

The mu’adhdhin said:

«أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ»

So Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu said:

«وَ أَنَا أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ»

The mu’adhdhin said:

«أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللَّهِ»

So Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu said:

«وَ أَنَا أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللَّهِ»

Yahya said: Then one of my companions narrated to me that when the mu’adhdhin said

«حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ»

Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu said:

«لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بالله»

Then he said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say it in this way.’

In this hadith, the response to «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» is mentioned as «لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ», but the response to «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ» is not mentioned; however, in al-Nasa’i, in the hadith of Mu‘awiyah radi Allahu anhu himself, «لا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ» is present.

In [نسائي، باب القول إذا قال المؤذن ....: 677] and [صحيح مسلم 385], in the narration of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab radi Allahu anhu, the response to both phrases is narrated as «لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ».
