Hadith 6050

Narrated Ma'rur: I saw Abu Dhar wearing a Burd (garment) and his slave too was wearing a Burd, so I said (to Abu Dhar), "If you take this (Burda of your slave) and wear it (along with yours), you will have a nice suit (costume) and you may give him another garment." Abu Dhar said, "There was a quarrel between me and another man whose mother was a non-Arab and I called her bad names. The man mentioned (complained about) me to the Prophet. The Prophet said, "Did you abuse so-and-so?" I said, "Yes" He said, "Did you call his mother bad names?" I said, "Yes". He said, "You still have the traits of (the Pre-lslamic period of) ignorance." I said. "(Do I still have ignorance) even now in my old age?" He said, "Yes, they (slaves or servants) are your brothers, and Allah has put them under your command. So the one under whose hand Allah has put his brother, should feed him of what he eats, and give him dresses of what he wears, and should not ask him to do a thing beyond his capacity. And if at all he asks him to do a hard task, he should help him therein."

Hadith Commentary:

After this, Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu made it his lifelong practice that whatever he wore himself, he would clothe his slaves with the same. An example of this is mentioned here. Where are such people today who would treat their servants and attendants in this manner? Except for whom Allah wills.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The person with whom Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu had this altercation was Bilal radi Allahu anhu. His noble mother was a black woman from Habasha (Abyssinia). In anger, Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu taunted him by saying: "O son of a black woman!" The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam regarded this as an insult and said to Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu that there still remains within you a trace of the era of ignorance (jahiliyyah), even though you have grown old.

(2)
Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah’s purpose in citing this hadith is to show that taunting someone because of their mother is a very reprehensible act, which the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not approve of; rather, he openly expressed his displeasure at such behavior.
(Fath al-Bari: 10/574)
After this incident, Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu made it his lifelong practice to dress his slaves in the same clothing he wore himself. However, today such people are rare who treat their servants and subordinates in this manner.
Wa Allahu al-musta‘an.
