Hadith 5990

Narrated `Amr bin Al-`As: I heard the Prophet saying openly not secretly, "The family of Abu so-and-so (i.e. Talib) are not among my protectors." `Amr said that there was a blank space (1) in the Book of Muhammad bin Ja`far. He added, "My Protector is Allah and the righteous believing people." `Amr bin Al-`As added: I heard the Prophet saying, 'But they (that family) have kinship (Rahm) with me and I will be good and dutiful to them. Hadith Authentication (Takhrij al-Hadith):

Linguistic Explanation:
Openly, manifestly.
I will keep moistening it with wet things, meaning I will keep joining it; among the Arabs, moistening is meant as joining and drying as breaking.

Understanding the Hadith:
It is understood that friendship, love, and relationships should only be maintained with righteous people, even if they are not relatives, and one should openly disassociate from disbelievers and polytheists, even if they are relatives. Just as Ibrahim (alayhis salam) also declared his disassociation, Allah Ta'ala has made this a model and example for us as well.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
"Balal" refers to moisture or a slight sweetness in the throat.
(2)
Amr bin Abbas is a teacher of Imam Bukhari rahimahullah. He says that in the book of Muhammad bin Ja'far, after "Aal Abi....." there was a blank space. No specific name is mentioned there. It is possible that some narrators, out of fear of tribulation, alluded to this point and overlooked it.
(3)
The meaning of the hadith is that I do not befriend someone due to kinship, but rather, the basis of my friendship is for the sake of Allah (lillahiyyah). On this basis, I claim friendship only with Allah and the people of faith. In other words, my love is based on faith and rectification, but I do not neglect the rights of kinship, and while considering their rights, I fully support them.
(4)
In this hadith, the womb (rahm) is likened to land that is moistened by water; when it is fully moist, it yields fruit and produce, and if it is neglected, it becomes dry and nothing is gained from it. Connection is called "balal" because it seeks attachment, and severance is called "yubs" because it results in separation. The meaning of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is that kindness to relatives should be mutual; if they take care of it, I will also take care of them.
Wallahu a‘lam.
