Narrated Al-Walid bin 'Aizar: I heard Abi `Amr 'Ash-Shaibani saying, "The owner of this house." he pointed to `Abdullah's house, "said, 'I asked the Prophet 'Which deed is loved most by Allah?" He replied, 'To offer prayers at their early (very first) stated times.' " `Abdullah asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" The Prophet said, "To be good and dutiful to one's parents," `Abdullah asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" The Prophet said, To participate in Jihad for Allah's Cause." `Abdullah added, "The Prophet narrated to me these three things, and if I had asked more, he would have told me more."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
From other narrations, it is understood that feeding others is the best deed, or that the most beloved deed is the one upon which there is consistency, even if it is little. The apparent contradiction in the narrations is due to differences in circumstances, times, or the conditions of those present.
(2)
In this hadith, good conduct towards parents has been given precedence over jihad in the way of Allah (jihad fi sabilillah), because jihad is dependent upon the permission of the parents. That is, the requirement of good conduct towards parents is that even jihad fi sabilillah should be undertaken with their permission, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade participation in jihad without the permission of the parents, as Imam Bukhari rahimahullah will establish a separate chapter regarding this later and will bring a hadith for it.
And Allah knows best.
