Hadith Commentary:
(1)
If anyone presented a gift of perfume to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he would accept it gladly and would not refuse it, because he was always in need of it. He used to converse with the angels, and in such circumstances, it was extremely important for him to remain clean and pure. In this regard, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Whoever is offered perfume should not refuse it, for its fragrance is pleasant and it is light to carry.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Tarajjul, Hadith: 4172)
(2)
A fragrant flower or perfume is not a heavy burden that would be unbearable, nor is it such a great favor that it would be difficult to reciprocate or that someone would complain if it were not reciprocated. So why should such a thing be refused?

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In a hadith from Jami' al-Tirmidhi, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Three things should not be refused:
a cushion, oil, and milk."
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi, al-Isti'dhan, Hadith: 2790)
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) established a chapter heading and alluded to this hadith.
In the hadith, "oil" refers to perfume (fragrance).
He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) instructed not to refuse it because it is easy to give and its benefit is great.
In Sahih Muslim, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Keeping perfume (fragrance) with oneself is easy, and its scent is the best and most excellent."
(Sahih Muslim, al-Alfaz min al-Adab wa Ghayriha, Hadith: 5883(2253))
However, in this narration, the word "rayhan" (sweet basil) is used instead of "tayyib" (perfume).
Nevertheless, the word "tayyib" is preserved and is more likely.
(Fath al-Bari: 5/258)
(2)
Although perfume (fragrance) is a minor thing, returning it can affect relationships; therefore, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) instructed not to return it.
It should not happen that a great loss is incurred over a trivial matter, and moreover, this is contrary to kindness and encouragement.

Explanation:
1:
That is, if a gift such as perfume was brought to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he would not return it either. Therefore, following the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), one should not return perfume that has been given as a gift.

Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
1. From this hadith, it is understood that using perfume (fragrance) is a preferred act, and if someone offers perfume as a gift, it should be accepted and not rejected. In another hadith, two other things are also mentioned along with perfume. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: [ثلاث لا ترد: الوسائد والدهن واللبن ] "Oil (al-duhn: meaning perfume), pillow/cushion, and milk—these three things, if given as a gift, should not be refused." (Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, al-Adab, Hadith: 2790). Imam Tirmidhi states that by "oil" is meant perfume.

2. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had a special fondness for perfume because angels would frequently come and go in his presence, and angels dislike foul odors. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would always remain perfumed with the best fragrances. His blessed body itself was naturally fragrant. May my father, my soul, and my spirit be sacrificed for him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
