Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet was neither conspicuously tall, nor short; neither, very white, nor tawny. His hair was neither much curled, nor very straight. Allah sent him (as an Apostle) at the age of forty (and after that) he stayed for ten years in Mecca, and for ten more years in Medina. Allah took him unto Him at the age of sixty, and he scarcely had ten white hairs on his head and in his beard.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Aisha radi Allahu anha has described the beautiful appearance of the hair of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in a most charming manner. She stated that the blessed hair of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was beautiful and somewhat wavy—not completely straight and hanging down, nor excessively curly. When combed, gentle waves would form in them, just as waves appear on sand dunes or in a pond when the wind blows. And when the hair was not combed for a few days, the hair would join together and take the shape of rings, like a coil. (Dala'il al-Nubuwwah: 1/298)
(2)
The qualities of the blessed hair of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam described in this hadith are also supported by other ahadith.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
After the beginning of revelation to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, approximately three years passed in which the sequence of revelation ceased.
This is called the “period of interruption” (zamana fatrat). The narrator has omitted from the period of residence in Makkah those years in which, after the beginning of revelation, no revelation came to him.
The total duration of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s stay in Makkah after prophethood is thirteen years, because at the time of his passing his age was sixty-three years, while his stay in Madinah Tayyibah was ten years.
The period of revelation is thirty years.
In these ahadith, there is mention of his beautiful stature, attractive complexion, and his beautiful hair.
➋
Hazrat Bara’ bin Azib radi Allahu anhu reports that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was the most handsome, beautiful, and well-proportioned among all people—neither very tall nor completely short.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Manaqib, Hadith: 3549)
Hazrat Ali radi Allahu anhu reports that the blessed stature of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was not very tall, but when he was in a gathering, he would appear taller than others.
(al-Tabaqat al-Kubra by Ibn Sa’d: 1/415)
Hazrat Aisha radi Allahu anha says that his blessed body was fresh and his blessed stature was neither very tall nor completely short.
When he walked alone, apart from people, he appeared to be of medium height.
(Dala’il al-Nubuwwah by al-Asfahani: 563)
Hazrat Hind bin Abi Hala radi Allahu anhu says that the blessed stature of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was shorter than a very tall man and somewhat taller than a person of medium height.
(Shama’il al-Tirmidhi, p. 20)
➌
The complexion of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was attractive, white with a reddish tinge, because this complexion is extremely beautiful. Hazrat Anas radi Allahu anhu reports that the complexion of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was white and radiant; due to frequent travel and exposure to the sun, sometimes a slight wheatish hue would be noticed in his fair complexion.
(Dala’il al-Nubuwwah: 1/202)
Hazrat Ali radi Allahu anhu reports that the beautiful face (blessed countenance) of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was white with a slight redness.
(Musnad Ahmad: 1/96)
Imam Bayhaqi rahimahullah has reconciled these various narrations in this way: the part of the blessed body that remained exposed to sun and air was reddish, and the part that remained covered by clothing was white and radiant.
(Fath al-Bari: 6/696)
➍
Regarding the hair of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Hazrat Hind bin Abi Hala radi Allahu anhu reports that it was somewhat wavy, that is, somewhat curved (curly).
(Dala’il al-Nubuwwah: 1/202)
➎
Hazrat Aisha radi Allahu anha has depicted the beautiful hair of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in a very charming manner. She says:
The blessed hair of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was beautiful and somewhat wavy—neither completely straight nor very curly. When combed, they would take on a gentle wave, like the ripples that appear on sand dunes or on the surface of a pond when the wind blows. And when not combed for some time, they would join together and form ringlets like circles.

Hadith Commentary: After the commencement of revelation to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, approximately three years passed in which the sequence of revelation was interrupted. This period is referred to as the "Fatrah." The narrator has omitted mention of those intervening years in which, after the beginning of revelation, no further revelation was sent. The total duration of the Prophet's stay in Makkah after prophethood is thirteen years.

Hadith Commentary:
However, in the narration of Abu Rimsha, which has been recorded by Al-Hakim and the authors of the Sunan, it is stated that there was henna dye on his (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) hair.
In the narration of Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma), it is mentioned that he used to apply yellow dye, and it is possible that he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) applied henna as a form of fragrance.
Similarly, saffron as well—those people considered it to be a dye.
It is also possible that Anas (radi Allahu anhu) did not see the dye.

Hadith Commentary:
It is stated in Sahih Muslim that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam never applied dye (khidab) to his hair. There were a few white hairs between his lower lip and chin and on his head. (Sahih Muslim, al-Fada’il, Hadith: 6077 (2341)) The number of your white hairs was not such that there was a need to dye them, but from other ahadith it is understood that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to apply dye to his hair. (Musnad Ahmad: 163/4)
Abu Rimthah radi Allahu anhu says: I came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and he had applied henna to his beard. (Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Tarajjul, Hadith: 4208)
It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to make his beard yellow with wars and saffron. (Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Tarajjul, Hadith: 4210)
There can be two ways to reconcile these different narrations:
➊ The different narrations can be attributed to different circumstances, meaning that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sometimes applied dye to his hair and most of the time left it without dye. Anas radi Allahu anhu considered the majority of circumstances, while the other narrators described the occasional situation. (Sharh Sahih Muslim by al-Nawawi: 209/2)
➋ In the case of affirmation and negation, affirmation is given precedence, because the one who affirms something possesses additional information that the one who negates does not have. Especially, the narration of Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma will be given precedence, because it is most likely that he obtained information about dyeing from his sister, Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Hafsah radi Allahu anha, and she used to observe the hair of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam while cleaning, washing, and combing his blessed head. This information was not available to Anas radi Allahu anhu. (Fath al-Bari: 354/10)

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: These hadiths establish that his complexion was extremely beautiful and his body was exceedingly soft and delicate, and from it emanated an intensely fragrant perspiration, the drops of which were as clear, transparent, and white as pearls.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Bā’in:
Very tall and lanky,
Extremely tall in stature.
(2)
Al-Amhaq:
As white as lime.
(3)
Ādam:
Completely wheat-colored,
Inclining towards blackness, because the Prophet’s complexion was white with a reddish tinge,
Which is also referred to as asmar or azhar.
Benefits and Issues:
The Prophet was born in Rabi‘ al-Awwal, and in this month the true dreams began,
Although the revelation (wahy) began to descend in Ramadan,
If the beginning of prophethood (bi‘thah) is counted from Ramadan, then the age will be thirty-nine and a half or forty and a half years,
If half a year is disregarded, it will be forty,
The duration of the coming of revelation in Makkah is ten years,
Anas radi Allahu anhu counted it this way or disregarded the three-year difference,
Just as some, by counting it fully, made the Prophet’s age sixty-five years,
Anas radi Allahu anhu himself later states that the Prophet passed away at the age of sixty-three,
From which it is understood
That in this hadith, he disregarded the three-year difference.
Or he omitted the three-year period of the suspension of revelation (fatrat al-wahy).

Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation:
1:
Those who have said that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was sixty (60) years old have omitted the fractional number and relied only on counting the decades.
And those who have said that he was sixty-five years old have included both the year of death and the year of birth in their calculation.
However, the most correct opinion is that of those who hold that he was sixty-three (63) years old,
because the narration stating sixty-three years is more authentic.

Urdu marginal note:
"Daadhi bacha" refers to the hair in the area between the lower lip and the chin. Whiteness (of hair) generally begins from here or from the temples.

Jurisprudential Points:
➊ In this hadith, only the decades are mentioned, whereas in another authentic hadith it is stated that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passed away at the age of sixty-three (63) years. See [صحيح بخاري 3536، وصحيح مسلم 2349]
➋ Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib radi Allahu anhu said: Among all people, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had the most beautiful face and was the most beautiful in form. [صحيح بخاري : 3549 و صحيح مسلم : 2336، دارالسلام 6066]
His blessed face was as beautiful as the moon. [صحيح بخاري : 3552] For further details, see: [الرسول كانك تراه] (Aina-e-Jamal-e-Nubuwwat). This book has been published based on my research. Alhamdulillah.
➌ Among Allah’s creation, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is the highest, the most virtuous, the most beautiful, and the loftiest in noble attributes. May my father and mother be sacrificed for him.
➍ The religion of Islam has reached us in a complete state, in which the appearance, biography, Sunnah, rulings, and tacit approvals of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam are all preserved and recorded.
