Hadith Commentary:
To trim the moustache so much that the edges of the lips become visible—this alone is the Sunnah, and the Ahl al-Hadith have adopted this practice. The other characteristics of fitrah (natural disposition) are also the same; each one has numerous benefits, the details of which would require volumes to enumerate.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
By "acts of fitrah" are meant those deeds whose performance is so important that it is as if they are innate, and also those practices which all the Prophets (alayhimussalam) adopted, whom we have been commanded to follow. These acts are Islamic symbols (sha‘a’ir) whose observance is necessary.

In some ahadith, their number is stated as ten, which are as follows:
Trimming the moustache, letting the beard grow, using the siwak (tooth-stick), putting water in the nose, cutting the nails, washing the joints, plucking the armpit hair, cleaning below the navel (pubic hair), performing istinja (cleansing after relieving oneself), and rinsing the mouth.

(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Taharah, Hadith: 604 (261))

No more than forty days should pass in the performance of these acts of fitrah.

(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Taharah, Hadith: 599 (258))

(2)
The part of the moustache hair that is above the lips is called "shawarib," and the sides are called "isbal." These should be trimmed to such an extent that the edges of the lips become visible.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has narrated from Ibn al-‘Arabi the wisdom behind trimming the moustache hair: if the hair is long, then the sticky fluid that flows from the nose spoils them to such an extent that they cannot be cleaned even by washing.

This mars a person's natural beauty and is also contrary to his dignity and respect.

Therefore, the Shari‘ah has commanded that they be trimmed.
