Hadith 5868

Narrated Anas bin Malik: that he saw a silver ring on the hand of Allah's Apostle for one day only. Then the people had silver rings made for themselves and wore it. On that, Allah's Apostle threw away their rings as well. (For the details of this Hadith, see Fath-ul-Bari, Vol. 12, page 438).

Hadith Commentary:
Here, there has been an error in transmission from the copyists. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had made a gold ring before its prohibition, and after learning of its prohibition, he removed that same ring and began to use a silver ring instead. From the statement here, it appears as if he first had a silver ring made and then removed it, whereas this is contrary to the actual event.

The Zuhri mentioned in the narration is attributed to his grandfather, Zuhrah ibn Kilab. His kunyah is Abu Bakr, his name is Muhammad, and he is the son of Abdullah ibn Shihab—a great jurist (faqih) and hadith scholar (muhaddith). He passed away in Ramadan of the year 164 AH.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
From this hadith, it is understood that when the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) threw away his silver ring, the people also threw away their silver rings. However, from other narrations, it is understood that he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had thrown away a gold ring, and the people also threw away their gold rings.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has mentioned one explanation in these words:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had a gold ring made for adornment.
When the people, following him, also had gold rings made, then the ruling of prohibition was revealed, so he and the people removed and threw them away. Then, as a seal, he had a silver ring made.
On it, he had the words "Muhammad Rasul Allah" engraved, so the people also had similar rings made. Then he removed his ring so that the people would also remove their engraved rings, because in their presence, the official seal would have no significance left.
When the people threw away their rings and their existence ceased, then the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) began to use his ring again.
Wallahu a‘lam (Fath al-Bari: 10/394)
(2)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had clearly stated that no person should engrave on his ring the inscription like that of my ring.
(Sahih Muslim, al-Libas, Hadith: 5473 (2091))
Despite this, people had this inscription engraved on their rings.
Regarding this, Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes that perhaps the prohibition did not reach those people, or they were such people whose hearts had not yet become firm in faith, as was the case with the hypocrites and others. Thus, they had rings made like the ring of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and had his inscription engraved on them, so he, expressing displeasure, removed and threw away his ring.
