Hadith 5862

Narrated Al-Miswar bin Makhrama: My father, Makhrama said to me, "I have come to know that some cloaks have come to the Prophet (saws) and he is distributing them. So O my son! take me to him." We went to the Prophet (saws) and found him in the house. My father said to me, "O my son! Call the Prophet (saws) for me." I found it hard to do so, so I said surprisingly, "Shall I call Allah's Messenger (saws) for you ?" My father said, "O mu son! He is not a tyrant." So I called him and he came out wearing a Dibaj cloak having gold buttons, and said: "O Makhrama, I kept this for you." The Prophet (saws) then gave it to him.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
That cloak was made of silk and had gold buttons attached to it.
It is possible that this incident occurred before the prohibition of gold for men, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) wore it and then gifted it to Mukharramah (radi Allahu anhu) so that he could wear it.
If this incident took place after the prohibition of gold, then the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had placed it on his hand, not worn it, and he gave it to Mukharramah (radi Allahu anhu) so that he could sell it in the market and use its price for himself, or so that he could give the cloak to one of his womenfolk to wear.

(2)
It should be noted that Mukharramah (radi Allahu anhu) was among the mu’allafatu’l-qulub (those whose hearts were to be reconciled), but the aspect of severity and strictness was predominant in him. However, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was truly very merciful and compassionate, and he would treat his companions with excellent conduct.
Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
